Tilak Varma’s Unbeaten 75 Powers Mumbai Indians to Thrilling Win Over Punjab Kings
Dharamshala, May 2026 : Tilak Varma produced a magnificent unbeaten innings of 75 to guide Mumbai Indians (MI) to a thrilling six-wicket victory over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a high-scoring Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala on Thursday.
Chasing a challenging target of 201, Mumbai Indians held their nerve to reach 205/5 in 19.5 overs, sealing the win with one ball remaining in an entertaining contest packed with aggressive batting and dramatic momentum shifts.
Earlier, Punjab Kings had posted a competitive 200/8 in their 20 overs, courtesy of a fluent half-century from Prabhsimran Singh and a powerful late cameo from Azmatullah Omarzai.
Mumbai’s chase began cautiously, with openers Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma taking time to assess the conditions. The duo managed just 13 runs in the opening two overs as Punjab’s bowlers maintained disciplined lines.
However, the momentum quickly shifted once Rickelton launched a fierce assault on Marco Jansen. The aggressive left-hander unleashed a series of attacking strokes, smashing boundaries and towering sixes to put pressure back on the Punjab bowlers.
Rickelton dominated the Power-play with fearless batting, striking four boundaries and four sixes during his explosive innings. His aggressive approach ensured Mumbai reached 59 without loss after six overs, even as Rohit Sharma struggled to accelerate at the other end.
Punjab Kings finally broke the opening partnership in the seventh over when Azmatullah Omarzai dismissed Rickelton for a blistering 48 off just 23 deliveries, denying him a deserved half-century by just two runs.
Naman Dhir then provided a brief attacking cameo, hitting two sixes before Marco Jansen removed him for nine runs. Rohit Sharma, who never looked fully comfortable during his innings, was eventually bowled by veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal after scoring 25 off 26 balls.
At that stage, Mumbai Indians found themselves under some pressure after losing two wickets in quick succession. But Tilak Varma stepped up with a composed and commanding innings that turned the match decisively in Mumbai’s favour.
Batting with confidence and maturity, Varma rotated the strike efficiently while also punishing loose deliveries. He formed a valuable partnership with Sherfane Rutherford, helping Mumbai rebuild steadily and maintain the required scoring rate.
The left-hander shifted the momentum dramatically with a huge 106-metre six off Chahal before adding another boundary in the same over. Rutherford also played a useful supporting role, striking a six before falling to Omarzai for 20 off 21 deliveries in the 17th over.
Despite losing his partner, Tilak Varma continued to dominate the Punjab attack with clean hitting and calm decision-making. He reached his half-century in only 25 balls and carried the chase deep into the final overs.
His unbeaten knock of 75 came off aggressive yet controlled batting and included six boundaries and six towering sixes. Will Jacks then provided the finishing touch with a quickfire 25 off just 10 balls as Mumbai completed the chase in dramatic fashion.
Earlier in the evening, Punjab Kings made a steady start after being asked to bat first. Openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh initially played cautiously on a pitch that offered some assistance to the bowlers.
Priyansh soon began attacking Jasprit Bumrah with a couple of boundaries, while Prabhsimran accelerated brilliantly in the fifth over by smashing three fours off Shardul Thakur.
Mumbai Indians secured their first breakthrough in the final over of the Power-play when Deepak Chahar bowled Priyansh for 22 off 17 balls. Punjab ended the first six overs at 58/1.
Cooper Connolly started carefully at one end, but Prabhsimran continued his aggressive approach. The wicketkeeper-batter hammered two sixes in the 10th over and completed his half-century in just 29 deliveries.
Prabhsimran eventually scored 57 off 32 balls, including six fours and four sixes, before being dismissed by Shardul Thakur.
The Mumbai pacer then delivered a crucial blow by clean bowling Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer in the same over, shifting the momentum back towards MI. Connolly also failed to capitalise on his start and was bowled by Raj Angad Bawa after scoring 21 runs.
Punjab Kings then suffered a middle-order collapse as Suryansh Shedge, Shashank Singh and Marco Jansen departed quickly. Shardul Thakur impressed with the ball, finishing with excellent figures of 4/39.
Just when Punjab appeared in danger of falling short of a competitive total, Azmatullah Omarzai produced a stunning late assault. The Afghan all-rounder smashed four sixes in a blistering 38 off only 17 balls to lift Punjab beyond the 200-run mark.
Vishnu Vinod added a useful 15 runs towards the end, while Xavier Bartlett remained unbeaten on 18 to help Punjab finish strongly.
However, Tilak Varma’s match-winning brilliance eventually proved decisive as Mumbai Indians completed a memorable chase to secure another important victory in IPL 2026.
