National Conference of State Election Commissioners on February 24 in New Delhi
Mumbai, Feb 2026 : The Election Commission of India (ECI) will organise a National Conference of State Election Commissioners (SECs) on February 24, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. State Election Commissioners from all States and Union Territories across the country will participate in the conference. Notably, this national conference is being held after a gap of more than 25 years; the previous such conference was organised in 1999.
The conference will be chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi also in attendance.
Along with the State Election Commissioners, their legal and technical experts will take part in the conference and share their views on various aspects of the electoral process. In addition, Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all 36 States and Union Territories will also be present at the national conference.
The primary objective of the conference is to strengthen coordination and synergy between the Election Commission of India and the State Election Commissions, while operating within their respective legal frameworks, particularly in matters related to election processes and management.
During the conference, detailed discussion sessions will be held on several key topics, including electoral laws governing voter eligibility in States and Union Territories, technological innovations such as the ECINET digital platform launched by the Election Commission of India, and issues related to Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
The Election Commission of India will also share its extensive experience in the preparation of electoral rolls and the conduct of elections, in accordance with the Constitution and existing legal provisions, with the State Election Commissions.
According to a press release issued by the Election Commission of India, State Election Commissions were established under the provisions of the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments through respective State laws. These commissions have been entrusted with the responsibility of preparing electoral rolls for Panchayat and Municipal institutions, as well as the superintendence, direction, and control of elections to these local bodies.
