Uproar On Day 2 Of Assam Assembly – Opposition Stages Walk Out; AASU Stages Statewide Protests.

Guwahati; May 2026: The second day of the four-day Assam Legislative Assembly session witnessed disturbance today (Friday – 22nd May 2026) as Congress legislators staged protests and walked out of the House over rising fuel prices and inflation during Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya’s address. The Governor had barely begun his speech when opposition MLAs interrupted the proceedings, alleging that the government had failed to address the growing economic hardships faced by the common people.

“I congratulate the people, Election Commission of India, state administration and security forces for the successful and peaceful completion of Assam Assembly Elections 2026. Since 2014, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, people have been relentlessly supporting the National Democratic Alliance”, the Governor said before the protests intensified.

Congress MLAs raised slogans inside the Assembly, criticising the address for allegedly overlooking key public concerns such as rising fuel prices, inflation and LPG shortages. Soon after, the opposition members staged a walkout and continued their protest outside the Assembly premises with placards and anti-government slogans.

The two Raijor Dal MLAs, led by their leader, Akhil Gogoi, remained in the House initially and continued to speak even as the governor delivered his speech. After about 30 minutes, the two Raijor Dal MLAs also walked out, after submitting a paper with the points raised by them. Speaking to reporters after the walkout, Naoboicha MLA Joy Prakash Das said the opposition had expected the Governor’s speech to address the worsening economic situation instead of highlighting the government’s achievements.

“We had requested the Governor to explain what measures the government has taken to tackle rising prices and maintain economic stability. But instead, the speech only praised the government. We protested inside the House, but our concerns were ignored, which is why we walked out”, Das said.

Targeting both the Centre and the state government, Das alleged that the ruling dispensation had failed to rein in inflation and had become disconnected from the struggles of ordinary citizens. “We are clearly stating that this government has failed to control prices. Have you ever heard any Prime Minister asking people to use fewer vehicles? It feels like a lockdown-like situation is approaching. Common people are struggling for food and fuel. What was promised before the elections is very different from the reality today”, he added.

First-time Congress MLA from Algapur-Katlichera, Zubair Anam, also criticised the Governor’s address for not mentioning LPG shortages and the rising cost of living. “The biggest concern today is inflation. People are standing in queues for LPG cylinders but are still not receiving them. Yet the Governor did not mention the issue at all. As a mark of protest, we walked out”, Anam said.

The BJP, however, dismissed the allegations and asserted that both the Centre and the state government were capable of addressing the issue. BJP MLA Jitu Goswami said there was no reason for the opposition to panic over the price rise. “There is a Prime Minister in the country and a Chief Minister in the state to handle the situation. The issue of rising prices will definitely be controlled”, Goswami said.

Another BJP legislator, Ramakanta Deori, attributed the price rise to international developments, particularly the ongoing conflict in West Asia. “There is a global increase in prices due to the West Asia conflict. People in villages may not be fully aware of the international factors behind it, and the impact has not been severe in rural areas”, Deori said. The uproar and opposition walkout marked a stormy start to the day’s proceedings, setting the tone for what is expected to be a politically charged Assembly session in Assam. Later, the Assam Legislative Assembly was adjourned till May 25, 2026.

Amidst the uproar in the Assam Assembly today, raising grave concern regarding the rising prices of fuel and essential commodities, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) today staged protests across Assam, demanding immediate government intervention to control inflation and provide relief to the public. Hundreds of protesters took part in the demonstration in Guwahati, carrying placards and raising slogans against both the State and Central governments. The protest march began at Swahid Nyas and proceeded towards Latasil Field.

Speaking to reporters during the protest, AASU president Utpal Sarma criticised the governments over rising prices and questioned their spending priorities. “During the Assam and West Bengal elections, the government used so many vehicles and organised massive events where huge amounts of money were spent. Why did they not think about saving at that time? After watching the oath-taking ceremonies in Assam and West Bengal, will anyone believe that there is an economic crisis in the country? The government cannot escape responsibility simply by asking people to reduce their expenses”, he said.

Sarma has further warned that the protests would continue if prices of fuel and essential commodities were not brought under control. AASU general secretary Samiran Phukan alleged that both the State and Central governments had failed to curb the rising prices. “The prices of all essential commodities have increased, and both the State and Central governments have become ineffective in controlling inflation. Because of this failure and in demand for price control, we have organised this protest”, he said.

Similar protests were also reported from Nalbari, where hundreds of students marched through different parts of the town raising slogans such as “Stop Price Rise” and “Axom Sarkar Hai Hai”. AASU’s Nalbari unit vice-president Bhabajit Bezbaruah alleged that the continuous rise in prices had pushed ordinary people into severe hardship. “Prices of every essential commodity have skyrocketed, but the government is not taking any action. We want to warn Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take immediate measures to control the situation, or else our protest will intensify”, he said.
