Trump Defends Tariffs, Says Trade Policy Has Sparked Record Investment and Will Survive Legal Challenges

Washington, July 2026 : US President Donald Trump has strongly defended his administration’s tariff policy, asserting that the import duties are legally sound and have become a major catalyst for attracting record levels of investment into the United States. Speaking during an extensive question-and-answer session at the White House following an event on civilian nuclear energy, Trump dismissed criticism over the legal validity of the latest tariffs and maintained that his trade strategy was delivering historic economic benefits.

Responding to questions about ongoing legal challenges and fresh trade measures involving the European Union, Trump insisted that the administration’s tariffs were built on a solid legal foundation and would withstand judicial scrutiny.

“These tariffs have been in place for a long time. They have been approved in thousands of cases over the years,” Trump said, rejecting suggestions that the latest trade actions could be overturned by the courts.

The President acknowledged that the administration had refined its legal approach following a recent ruling by the US Supreme Court. While expressing disappointment with the court’s decision, he said the administration had simply shifted to alternative statutory provisions that have been used by previous governments.

“I thought the decision by the Supreme Court was not a good one. But there are many legal avenues for tariffs, and we simply followed another path,” Trump remarked.

According to the President, the administration’s revised approach has enabled it to continue collecting substantial tariff revenues without interrupting its broader trade agenda.

“We have used those authorities, and we are taking in billions of dollars,” he said.

Trump once again portrayed tariffs as the driving force behind what he described as an unprecedented surge in foreign and domestic investment flowing into the American economy. He claimed that companies from around the world were choosing to expand manufacturing and production facilities in the United States because of the administration’s trade policies.

“Largely because of tariffs, we have USD 19.2 trillion being invested in our country,” Trump said.

He contrasted this figure with investment levels during the previous administration, claiming the difference demonstrated the effectiveness of his economic strategy.

“The previous administration had less than a trillion dollars in investment over four years. We have USD 19.2 trillion in one year. There has never been anything like it in American history,” he said.

Trump argued that without tariffs, such investment would not have materialised.

“Without tariffs, we would be in big trouble. Tariffs are one of the main reasons businesses are bringing manufacturing back to America,” he said.

The President reiterated that the administration had complied with the Supreme Court’s guidance by relying on different legal provisions for imposing import duties.

“The Supreme Court essentially said, ‘Use another legal route.’ We did exactly that last month,” he stated.

Throughout his remarks, Trump emphasised that tariffs remain a cornerstone of his economic agenda. He argued that import duties not only generate significant federal revenue but also encourage companies to relocate production facilities to the United States, strengthen domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on foreign supply chains.

During the interaction, Trump was also asked about reports that the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) had cited child labour concerns as one of the reasons behind a recent trade action. Responding briefly, the President suggested that the issue had indeed been among the factors considered during the review process.

“It appears that was one of the reasons they identified,” he said. “They examine conditions around the world, and child labour was one of the issues they looked at.”

However, Trump did not identify any specific country or provide additional details regarding the investigation.

The President repeatedly linked trade policy with broader national priorities, including industrial growth, energy security and manufacturing competitiveness. He argued that tariffs have played a central role in strengthening the US economy by encouraging businesses to invest domestically rather than overseas.

Trump maintained that his administration’s approach has helped create favourable conditions for large-scale investments in manufacturing, infrastructure and advanced industries, positioning the United States as a more attractive destination for global capital.

Tariffs continue to be one of the defining features of the Trump administration’s economic strategy and remain closely watched by governments, businesses and financial markets worldwide. Major trading partners, including the European Union, China and several Asian economies, continue to monitor Washington’s evolving trade policies as negotiations, legal challenges and tariff disputes shape the future of international commerce and global supply chains.
