Russia Condemns US–Israel Strikes on Iran, Calls for Immediate Return to Diplomacy
Moscow, Feb 2026 : Russia on Saturday strongly condemned what it described as an “unprovoked” armed attack by the United States and Israel on Iran, warning that the escalation poses serious risks to regional and global stability and underscoring the urgent need to restore a political and diplomatic path to resolve the crisis.
In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Sergei Lavrov held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, at Tehran’s initiative. During the call, the Iranian foreign minister briefed Lavrov on steps being taken by Iran’s leadership to respond to what he termed US and Israeli aggression, which he said had once again derailed negotiations aimed at achieving a peaceful settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Araghchi also informed Lavrov of Iran’s intention to urgently convene a meeting of the United Nations Security Council to address the unfolding situation. He argued that the latest military actions had undermined ongoing diplomatic efforts and violated international norms governing the peaceful resolution of disputes.
Condemning the strikes in unequivocal terms, Lavrov said the attacks by the United States and Israel constituted a blatant violation of the principles and norms of international law. He warned that such actions disregard the potentially grave consequences for peace and security not only in the Middle East but also at the global level. The Russian foreign minister stressed the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities against Iran and a swift return to negotiations and diplomacy.
The statement added that Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to play a constructive role in de-escalation efforts, including through mechanisms at the United Nations. Moscow, he said, remains prepared to facilitate the search for peaceful solutions based on international law, mutual respect, and a careful balance of interests among all parties involved.
The Russian reaction followed confirmation earlier in the day by US President Donald Trump that Washington had initiated “major combat operations” in Iran. The announcement marked a dramatic escalation in hostilities and intensified fears of a broader regional conflict in a strategically vital and economically sensitive part of the world.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued a separate statement condemning the renewed military aggression, noting that it had taken place even as Tehran and Washington were engaged in a diplomatic process. The statement said Iran had entered negotiations despite being aware of what it described as hostile intentions, in order to demonstrate to the international community the legitimacy of Iran’s position and the illegitimacy of any justification for military action.
The Iranian ministry also called on the United Nations and its Security Council to act without delay, stressing their responsibility to uphold international peace and security. It urged the UN Secretary-General, the President of the Security Council, and its members to fulfill their duties by addressing what Iran described as clear military aggression by the United States and Israel.
As tensions continue to rise, Russia’s intervention highlights growing international concern over the potential for further escalation and underscores renewed calls for restraint, dialogue, and a return to diplomacy as the only viable path forward.
