Mizoram Indigenous Games & Cultural Festival 2026 Inaugurated in Aizawl

Aizawl, March 18, 2026: The Doordarshan Mizoram Indigenous Games & Cultural Festival 2026, jointly organised by Doordarshan Aizawl and the Mizoram Indigenous Games Association (MIGA), was inaugurated today at Ramhlun Sports Complex. The event was graced by Art & Culture Minister C. Lalsawivunga.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister подчеркнул the importance of preserving and promoting traditional culture and indigenous practices. He said that every community has its own unique customs and traditions, and it is vital to value, protect, and carry them forward. He described the festival as a meaningful initiative to revive and celebrate traditional Mizo games that are deeply rooted in the community’s way of life and culture.

He noted that while modern sports are gaining popularity globally and across India, there is a risk of traditional indigenous games being forgotten. He appreciated the joint efforts of Doordarshan and MIGA in reviving these age-old practices and creating a platform for people to reconnect with their cultural heritage.

The Minister further said that culture is constantly evolving, with changes in lifestyle, food habits, and daily living. While progress is essential, he cautioned that traditional values and practices inherited from ancestors should not be neglected. He stressed the need to reintroduce and promote indigenous games among the younger generation, who may not be familiar with them, ensuring that cultural identity remains strong.

During the inaugural programme, V.L. Thakima, Secretary of the organising committee, delivered the welcome address, while T.V. Lalbiaknunga, General Secretary of MIGA, presented a report. Cultural performances were presented by Chhawkhlei Cultural Club, including traditional dances and songs. Musical performances were also held by Lilac and David Darlong.

The festival will continue until Saturday, featuring competitions in traditional games such as Inbuan (wrestling), Insuk Nawr, Insaihruipawh, Inarpasual, Kalchhet, Invawr, and Kawikah. Evening sessions will include performances by renowned artists from across Mizoram, making the festival a vibrant celebration of indigenous sports and culture.
