Olympic Qualification Rules for Skateboarding at LA 2028 Announced by World Skate

Geneva, March 2026: World Skate on Thursday unveiled the qualification system for Skateboarding Park and Street events at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, outlining a structured two-phase pathway for athletes aiming to compete on the world’s biggest sporting stage.

The qualification process will begin with Phase 1, which will feature the World Skateboarding Tour (WST). Scheduled to run from June 11, 2026, to March 31, 2028, this phase will serve as the sole route for athletes to advance to the next stage. National teams will be allowed to register up to three athletes per WST event, while an additional six skaters per country may qualify based on their position in the World Skateboarding Ranking top 30, determined 60 days prior to each event.

Phase 2 of the qualification cycle will take place between April 1 and June 11, 2028. This stage will consist of a dedicated contest series featuring the top 44 athletes in each discipline and gender category, as selected by World Skate. In total, 176 athletes will compete in this phase, each starting with a baseline of points based on their ranking at the end of Phase 1. This system is designed to ensure a fair and competitive progression toward Olympic qualification.

The federation also confirmed that each country will be permitted a maximum of three qualified athletes per event at the Games. To promote global representation, at least one athlete from the host nation will secure a place if not already qualified through rankings. Additionally, every continent will be guaranteed representation, ensuring diversity in participation. A Universality Quota will further allow one athlete from underrepresented countries or regions to qualify, reinforcing inclusivity within the sport.

Meanwhile, with just over two years remaining until the 2028 Summer Olympics, organizers have also revealed the official visual identity for the Games. Branded as “LA in Full Bloom,” the theme draws inspiration from California’s rare “Superbloom” phenomenon, where dormant wildflower seeds transform landscapes into vibrant displays of color.

This concept reflects the dynamic and diverse spirit of Los Angeles, symbolising growth, creativity, and global unity. The visual identity is expected to play a key role in shaping the Games’ branding and fan engagement in the lead-up to 2028.

With clear qualification guidelines now in place and preparations gaining momentum, the road to Los Angeles 2028 is set to offer both intense competition and a celebration of skateboarding’s global appeal.
