Rahane Opts to Bowl as KKR Face SRH at Eden Gardens

Kolkata, April 2026 : Ajinkya Rahane, captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, won the toss and chose to bowl first against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their Indian Premier League 2026 clash at the iconic Eden Gardens on Thursday.

KKR entered the match with an unchanged playing XI, showing faith in the combination that, despite a loss in their opening game, delivered several positives. Both teams had posted totals exceeding 200 runs in their respective first matches of the season but ended up on the losing side due to underwhelming bowling efforts, making this contest crucial for early momentum in the tournament.

Speaking after the toss, Rahane explained his decision to bowl first, pointing to the pitch conditions and weather factors. He noted the presence of grass on the surface—an uncommon sight at Eden Gardens—and mentioned that recent rain and a steady breeze influenced his choice. While uncertainty remained about the dew factor later in the evening, Rahane expressed confidence that conditions would remain suitable for a full 40-over contest. He also hinted that all-rounder Cameron Green is progressing well and could soon contribute with the ball.

On the other side, Ishan Kishan, leading Sunrisers Hyderabad, said his team would also have preferred to bowl first but was prepared to adapt to batting conditions. Emphasising the importance of composure and execution, Kishan said his side aims to focus on basics and remain calm even under pressure situations.

A notable change for SRH was the inclusion of debutant Shivang Kumar, a left-arm wrist-spin all-rounder. Kishan highlighted that Shivang had impressed during practice sessions and was brought in to strengthen the team’s wicket-taking options. He also provided an update on key player Pat Cummins, indicating that the Australian all-rounder is expected to return soon, which would significantly boost the side’s balance.

The playing XIs featured a mix of experienced campaigners and emerging talents. KKR’s lineup included players like Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy, while SRH relied on the firepower of Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen.

With both teams eager to bounce back from opening defeats, the match promises to be a high-intensity encounter. The focus will be on improved bowling performances as each side looks to convert strong batting displays into a winning result.
