Trump Confirms Iran Blockade, Reiterates ‘No Nuclear Weapon’ Red Line

Washington, April 2026 : Donald Trump on Monday asserted that Iran “will not have a nuclear weapon” as he confirmed that a United States naval blockade had come into effect, signalling a sharp escalation in pressure on Iran amid stalled negotiations.

Speaking during an unscheduled interaction with reporters outside the Oval Office, Trump made it clear that the central issue in the ongoing dispute with Tehran remains its nuclear ambitions. “It was over the fact that they will never have a nuclear weapon… Iran will not have a nuclear weapon,” he said, underlining what he described as a non-negotiable condition for any future agreement.

The President indicated that while several aspects of a potential deal had been discussed, Iran had not agreed to abandon its nuclear programme. “We agreed to a lot of things, but they didn’t agree to that,” Trump said, expressing confidence that Tehran would eventually concede. “I think they will agree to it. I’m almost sure of it… If they don’t agree, there’s no deal,” he added.

Despite the hardened stance, Trump suggested that diplomatic channels remain open, claiming that Iran had shown renewed interest in resuming talks. “We’ve been called by the other side. They’d like to make a deal very badly,” he said, hinting at possible backchannel communications between the two sides.

On the military front, Trump confirmed that the much-anticipated blockade had officially begun. “Yeah, it started, 10:00,” he said in response to a question, referring to the timing of the operation. The blockade is aimed at restricting maritime activity linked to Iranian ports, marking a significant escalation in Washington’s strategy to curb Tehran’s influence and economic capabilities.

Describing the rationale behind the move, Trump accused Iran of attempting to leverage global dependence on critical energy routes. “We can’t let a country blackmail or extort the world because that’s what they’re doing,” he said, adding that the United States would not tolerate such tactics.

The President suggested that the blockade serves multiple strategic objectives, including compelling Iran to return to negotiations and ensuring stability in global energy markets. “Maybe everything… both of those things, certainly, and more,” he remarked, indicating a broad scope behind the decision.

Trump also emphasised that the United States is not directly dependent on the Strait of Hormuz for its energy needs. “We don’t use the strait. We don’t need the strait. We have our own oil and gas,” he said, highlighting America’s energy independence. However, he acknowledged the global significance of the waterway, through which a substantial portion of the world’s oil supply passes. “We don’t need it, but the world needs it,” he added.

In a strong assertion, Trump claimed that Iran’s military capabilities had been severely weakened. “Their Navy is gone, their air force is gone… their radar is gone,” he said, portraying Tehran as significantly diminished in terms of defence capacity.

He also issued a warning about the consequences of failing to reach an agreement. “It won’t be pleasant for them,” Trump said, without elaborating further on potential actions.

The President noted that several countries had expressed willingness to support the United States in enforcing the blockade. “Other countries… have offered their services,” he said, suggesting that a broader international coalition could be involved.

On China’s position, Trump said Xi Jinping had not directly contacted him but would prefer a resolution to the crisis. “We have a very good relationship with China. He would like to see this ended also,” Trump said.

As tensions remain high, Trump’s remarks underline a dual-track approach — combining military pressure with the possibility of renewed diplomacy — as Washington seeks to force a decisive shift in Iran’s stance.
