Maharashtra Shuts Schools Across Several Districts as Heavy Rain Alert Triggers Safety Measures
Mumbai, July 2026: Authorities across several districts in Maharashtra have declared a holiday for schools and colleges after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued warnings of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, prompting district administrations to take precautionary measures to ensure public safety. The closures come as relentless monsoon showers over the past few days have disrupted normal life across the state, particularly in Mumbai and adjoining regions.
Continuous rainfall over the last two to three days has caused widespread waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and damage to infrastructure in several parts of Maharashtra. Rain-related incidents have also claimed lives, prompting authorities to remain on high alert. With forecasts predicting intensified rainfall on Tuesday, district collectors moved swiftly to suspend educational activities in vulnerable areas.
The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Thane district, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. Considering the persistent downpour and the increased risk of flooding, uprooted trees, and traffic congestion, the district administration has ordered all Anganwadis, schools, and colleges to remain closed. Officials said the decision was taken to safeguard students and prevent unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions.
Nashik district is expected to witness extremely heavy rainfall, especially in rural areas such as Trimbakeshwar, Igatpuri, Peth, Dindori, and Nashik Rural. In response, authorities have announced a holiday for schools and colleges across these five talukas, while educational institutions within the Nashik Municipal Corporation limits will also remain shut. As an additional precaution, weekly local markets in the affected areas have been suspended to minimise public movement.
Palghar district, which has already experienced torrential rainfall, is also expected to receive more heavy showers. Anticipating worsening conditions, the district administration has declared a holiday for all schools. Officials said the move was aimed at ensuring children’s safety amid forecasts of continued intense rainfall and the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas.
In Pune district, the rain alert is focused on the Sahyadri and Western Ghats region. Schools in Maval, Mulshi, Bhor, Velhe, and Ambegaon talukas will remain closed, while educational institutions in Pune city and the district’s other talukas will continue to function normally. Authorities said the selective closure was based on the IMD’s location-specific weather forecast.
Meanwhile, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has announced a holiday for all schools under its jurisdiction. Educational institutions in Ratnagiri district will also remain closed as heavy rainfall is expected to continue along the Konkan coast.
State authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterlogged and landslide-prone areas, and follow official advisories as emergency services remain on standby. With the monsoon expected to remain active, district administrations are closely monitoring the situation and have assured that further decisions will be taken based on updated weather forecasts.
