Prashant Kishor to Contest Bankipur Bypoll, Jan Suraaj Eyes Breakthrough in BJP Stronghold

Patna, July 2026 : Election strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor will contest the upcoming by-election from Bihar’s Bankipur Assembly constituency, marking his electoral debut from a seat that has long been considered a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bastion. The announcement was made on Sunday by Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) president Manoj Bharti, ending weeks of speculation over Kishor’s political plans.

The bypoll has attracted considerable attention as Bankipur has remained firmly in the BJP’s control for decades. The vacancy arose after former MLA Nitin Nabin, who represented the constituency and now serves as the BJP’s national president, resigned from the Assembly following his election to the Rajya Sabha.

Confirming his decision to enter the contest, Kishor said the election would be fought with determination and viewed it as an opportunity to strengthen the Jan Suraaj movement and promote an alternative political vision for Bihar.

Addressing reporters in Patna, Kishor said that Jan Suraaj has been the central mission of his life over the past four years and pledged to dedicate the next decade to bringing political transformation in the state.

He said the Bankipur by-election represents more than just a contest for a legislative seat, describing it as a crucial step toward establishing a new political alternative in Bihar. According to him, many supporters who had backed the Jan Suraaj movement during the 2025 Assembly elections were disappointed by the outcome, but remain hopeful that a victory in Bankipur could revive the campaign for change.

Kishor thanked party leaders, workers and supporters for placing their confidence in him and entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the party in the high-profile electoral battle.

The Jan Suraaj founder, who built his reputation as one of India’s most successful political strategists before launching his own political outfit, has consistently advocated governance reforms, transparency and grassroots participation. His decision to contest from Bankipur is being viewed as a significant test of his ability to convert political influence into electoral success.

The by-election is scheduled to be held on July 30, with counting of votes on August 3. Political parties have already intensified preparations, with the contest expected to draw statewide attention.

The Congress has indicated its willingness to support Kishor’s candidature, raising the possibility of a broader opposition understanding. Attention is now focused on the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), which has yet to announce whether it will back the Jan Suraaj chief in an effort to wrest the prestigious constituency from the BJP.

A victory for Kishor would mark a major political breakthrough for the Jan Suraaj Party and could reshape Bihar’s opposition landscape ahead of future elections, while the BJP will be aiming to retain one of its safest and most symbolic Assembly seats.
