Kolkata Police Unfollow Mamata, Abhishek After BJP Forms Government in Bengal

Kolkata, May 2026 : In a significant symbolic shift following the change of power in West Bengal, the official X account of Kolkata Police on Saturday unfollowed former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee shortly after BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of the state.

At the same time, the Kolkata Police account updated the list of personalities and institutions it follows on the social media platform. The revised list now includes Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister’s Office, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and his office, along with newly sworn-in Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

The development comes days after the BJP registered a sweeping victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, the results of which were declared on May 4. The party secured 207 seats, ending the long rule of the Trinamool Congress in the state.

Suvendu Adhikari, who emerged victorious from both the Nandigram and Bhabanipur Assembly constituencies, took oath as the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal at a grand ceremony held at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Grounds.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, several Union Ministers, and Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states, besides senior party leaders and dignitaries.

Amid the political transition, social media users quickly noticed the changes in the Kolkata Police account. The official handle currently follows 42 accounts, but neither Mamata Banerjee nor Abhishek Banerjee feature in that list anymore.

Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee’s own social media accounts also reflected the transition in power. Until Saturday afternoon, her X handle and Facebook page still identified her as the Chief Minister of West Bengal. However, following Suvendu Adhikari’s oath-taking ceremony, the designation was reportedly removed, and the accounts were updated to display only her name.

Along with Suvendu Adhikari, five ministers were also administered the oath of office and secrecy as part of the first BJP government in West Bengal. The allocation of portfolios is expected to be announced later.

Soon after the swearing-in ceremony, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited Jorasanko Thakur Bari to pay tribute to Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore on the occasion of his birth anniversary.

The political transition and the visible changes across official platforms have drawn considerable public attention, marking the beginning of a new political chapter in West Bengal.
