Udhayanidhi Stalin Elected DMK Legislature Party Leader Amid Tamil Nadu Political Realignment

Chennai, May 2026: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Sunday elected party youth wing secretary and MLA Udhayanidhi Stalin as the leader of its legislature party, a day before the newly elected members are set to take oath in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

The development comes at a time of major political shifts in Tamil Nadu following the recently concluded Assembly elections, which produced a fractured mandate and dramatically altered the state’s political landscape.

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly. However, the party fell short of the majority mark required to form the government on its own.

In the aftermath of the election results, TVK initiated discussions with several parties for support. In a significant political move, the Indian National Congress became the first constituent of the DMK-led alliance to extend support to the Vijay-led party, paving the way for the formation of a new government in the state.

Subsequently, the Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and Indian Union Muslim League also announced outside support to the TVK government, helping it comfortably cross the majority mark in the Assembly.

Following the alliance rearrangement, Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday morning at a grand ceremony held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay and members of his Cabinet.

Amid the changing political equations, the DMK convened a crucial meeting of its newly elected MLAs on May 7 at Kalaignar Arangam in Anna Arivalayam under the leadership of party president and former Chief Minister M. K. Stalin.

During the meeting, the party adopted four resolutions, including one strongly criticising the Congress for withdrawing support from the alliance. Another resolution authorised Stalin to take all future political decisions on behalf of the party.

With the Assembly scheduled to convene on Monday for the oath-taking ceremony of MLAs, the DMK formally announced its legislature party leadership team.

According to the party’s official statement, Udhayanidhi Stalin was unanimously elected as the DMK Legislature Party Leader. Senior leader K. N. Nehru was chosen as the Deputy Leader of the legislature party, while E. V. Velu was appointed as the party whip in the Assembly.

The appointments are being viewed as part of the DMK’s strategy to strengthen its legislative leadership and reorganise the party’s role as the principal opposition force in the state following the formation of the new TVK-led government.
