State Government Signs MoUs with Companies for Nuclear Power Generation
Mumbai, May 2026 : Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said that the state’s growing strength in the clean energy sector will play a crucial role in helping India become an “energy-sufficient” nation while achieving its goal of zero carbon emissions, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that investments flowing into Maharashtra’s clean energy sector would significantly contribute to strengthening India’s energy security. He also assured that the state government would provide full support to companies willing to invest in nuclear energy generation projects in Maharashtra.
The statement came after the Maharashtra government signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with four major companies in the nuclear energy sector during a meeting held at the state secretariat (Mantralaya). The companies include NTPC Limited, Adani Power, Reliance Industries Limited, and Lalitpur Power Generation Company Limited.
The meeting was attended by State Energy Minister Atul Save, Additional Chief Secretary (Energy) Abha Shukla, senior officials from the participating companies, including A.P. Samal from NTPC, Vivek Sharma from Adani Power, and Ranjay Sharan from Reliance Industries’ nuclear energy division.
Chief Minister Fadnavis said that Maharashtra offers vast opportunities in the clean energy sector, and nuclear energy will play a vital role in ensuring sustainable power generation. He added that investments in this sector would not only boost electricity production but also generate significant employment opportunities.
He further stated that Maharashtra aims to remain a leading state in clean energy generation and will continue to encourage innovation and large-scale investments in the sector.
The Chief Minister also urged the companies to expedite implementation of the signed MoUs and begin survey work for identifying suitable project sites. He assured that the state government and its departments would extend full cooperation for the timely execution of these projects.
During the event, MoU documents were formally exchanged between Additional Chief Secretary Abha Shukla and representatives of the respective companies.
Investment, Power Generation, and Employment Impact
Under the agreements, Adani Power will invest approximately ₹1.5 lakh crore in Maharashtra, leading to an estimated 6,000 MW of nuclear power generation and around 12,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Reliance Industries Limited is expected to invest ₹2 lakh crore, resulting in 7,200 MW of power generation and more than one lakh employment opportunities.
NTPC Limited will invest around ₹1 lakh crore, targeting 7,200 MW of power generation and creating approximately 5,000 jobs.
Meanwhile, Lalitpur Power Generation Company Limited will invest ₹2 lakh crore, which is expected to generate 5,000 MW of nuclear energy and around 3,000 jobs.
In total, the agreements are expected to bring investments worth ₹6.5 lakh crore into Maharashtra, enabling the generation of 25,400 MW of nuclear power and creating approximately 1,23,500 employment opportunities across the state.
Officials said this major push in the nuclear and clean energy sector will significantly enhance Maharashtra’s role in India’s transition towards sustainable and low-carbon energy production.
