Alipore Zoological Garden Announced Summer Care For Zoo Animals.

Kolkata; May 2026: Alipore Zoological Garden in a bid to protect the animals from the excessive heat that has crippled the easy movement of the animals has taken necessary steps in providing relief to these animals. As the authorities have reiterated that this Summer (2026) is a challenging season for the captive animals residing at the Zoo due to extreme heat. Therefore, proper care is necessary to keep them safe, cool, and healthy.

A glimpse of summer-season-specific care are enlisted below:

• Zoo animals are given fresh and cool drinking water regularly.

• Animals and birds are bathed in the morning to reduce heat stress.

• Water sprinklers are used in animal enclosures to keep the surroundings cool.

• Cane shades (locally called as ‘dorma’) and Paddy straw thatches, tarpaulin, agro net are used to block direct sunlight within the enclosures.

• Fans and air coolers are also installed in some animal houses.

• Ice slabs are provided for animals like bears and carnivores.

• ORS and Glucon-D is mixed with water to prevent dehydration. Seasonal fruits like juicy mango, watermelon, cucumber, ripe jackfruit, papaya, grapes, and sour curd are added to their regular diet to keep their body hydrated & energetic.

• Regular monitoring is done to protect animals from heat stress.
