Tamil Nadu Shocked by Coimbatore Child Murder; CM Vijay Assures Stern Action
Coimbatore, May 2026 : Tamil Nadu has been left shaken by the abduction and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Coimbatore, an incident that has triggered widespread grief, anger, and renewed concerns over the safety of women and children across the state. The brutal crime has sparked strong public reactions, with demands growing for swift justice and tougher measures to prevent such incidents.
Responding to the tragedy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay expressed deep sorrow and condemned the crime in the strongest terms. In an official statement issued on Saturday, the Chief Minister described the incident as an “inhuman and unforgivable criminal act” that has caused immense pain and shock to society.
He said such barbaric crimes have no place in a civilised society and assured that the state government would take strict and immediate action against those responsible. Extending condolences to the bereaved family, Vijay said the government stood firmly with them during this difficult period.
“I offer my heartfelt condolences to the family that is suffering the unbearable loss of their beloved daughter. The government stands with them in this difficult time,” the Chief Minister said.
The case witnessed a major breakthrough after police arrested two individuals in connection with the crime. The accused have been identified as Karthik (33), originally from Nagapattinam and residing at Pallapalayam near Coimbatore, and his associate Mohanraj.
According to police sources, the accused were known to the victim’s family. Investigators suspect that the child was abducted before being allegedly murdered by the accused. The shocking nature of the crime has intensified public outrage and calls for stronger safeguards for children.
Police officials said Karthik sustained injuries while allegedly attempting to escape from custody during the investigation. Authorities stated that he suffered fractures to his leg and hand during the escape attempt. He was later secured and brought back under police custody for further questioning.
Meanwhile, the second accused, Mohanraj, was produced before Judicial Magistrate Arun Kumar at the Sulur Judicial Magistrate Court on Saturday. The court remanded him to judicial custody until May 27.
Chief Minister Vijay said he had instructed senior police officials to conduct a comprehensive and time-bound investigation into the case. He also directed authorities to ensure the prompt filing of a chargesheet so that legal proceedings could move forward without delay.
“The Tamil Nadu government will act firmly to ensure severe punishment under the law for those who commit heinous crimes against women and children. All immediate and necessary actions will be taken,” the Chief Minister said.
Police officials confirmed that the investigation is continuing and additional details are expected to emerge in the coming days. The incident has once again highlighted growing public concerns regarding child safety and law enforcement measures aimed at protecting vulnerable sections of society.
