Assam Transport Minister Flags The Fragmented Road Safety Situation Across The State As Death Toll Climbs.

Guwahati; May 2026: Two separate road accidents in Guwahati today around mid-night (Wednesday, 27th May) have once again raised serious concerns over road safety in the city, prompting Assam Transport Minister Charan Boro to announce today (Wednesday – 27th May 2026) that a meeting would be held to review the situation and discuss immediate safety measures. “Whatever measures need to be taken regarding road safety will be decided after today’s meeting. Immediate action will be taken”, Boro told the press.

The first accident reportedly occurred opposite the Assam Legislative Assembly building in Dispur at around 00:30 hours, when a motorcycle rider crashed into an electric pole. The motorcycle caught fire moments after the collision, and the rider, identified as Bakhab Raj Chutia from Dhemaji, died on the spot in the blaze. Fire and emergency services were subsequently rushed to the scene to douse the flames. A witness recounted the harrowing sequence of events, “We saw the fire and came running. We asked the police if we should pull him out, but they did not allow us”.

In a separate incident at Bhangagarh, a speeding vehicle allegedly driven by an intoxicated driver rammed into another car, injuring one person, who was immediately taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment. One of the victims described the terrifying impact, “We were returning from Paltan Bazar when the vehicle behind us came at a speed of nearly 120 kmph. It hit our car with such force that our vehicle crashed into a water tanker in front of us and overturned. Luckily, we survived because of the airbags”.

The victim also alleged that while one occupant of the speeding vehicle was taken to hospital, another person fled the scene. Today’s accidents are not isolated incidents but part of a deeply troubling pattern across Assam.

According to official data released on April 28th, more than 1,000 people lost their lives in over 4,200 road accidents across the state during the first three months of 2026 alone. The State Transport Department recorded 4,219 road accidents and 1,008 fatalities between January and March this year, compared to 4,232 accidents and 1,035 deaths during the same period in 2025 – a marginal dip in numbers, but little cause for comfort.

09 districts, namely: Guwahati City, Kamrup, Nagaon, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Golaghat, Barpeta, Dhubri and Hojai, accounted for nearly 50% of total fatalities across the state. The state’s severity index stood at 0.24, lower than the national average of approximately 0.36, but still higher than comparatively safer states such as Kerala and Tamil Nadu, officials noted.

As the Transport Minister convenes his review meeting, Tuesday night’s twin tragedies serve as a grim reminder that behind every statistic is a life lost and that Assam’s road safety crisis demands more than meetings alone.

Team Maverick.
