Assam Speaker Ranjit Das Admits Irregularities In Assam Assembly; Although No Formal Complaint Being Received.

Guwahati; June 2026: Reports of large-scale corruption in the Assam Legislative Assembly during the 2021-2026 Himanta Biswa Sarma led BJP regime has drawn international media headlines, Assam Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass said that no one has come to him with any complaint in this regard.

Ranjeet Kumar Dass, however, admitted that he is aware of irregularities in promotions, illegal extension of services and appointments, and that steps are being taken in this regard. The Speaker told media reporters that he has only seen the allegations in the media. Till date, no one has lodged complaints before him over the alleged corruption. If someone comes forward with evidence of corruption, he would definitely look into it.

The honourable speaker has said that as soon as he took over as Speaker, he came to know that the Secretary of the Assembly had been given an extension illegally. As per law, the Secretary can be given extension for a period of 02 years. But the 02 years period had already passed, and that is why the Secretary was released from service on the last day of the first session of the current Assembly.

The Speaker said that some persons were appointed on contract basis without requirement and rules were not followed during the appointments. That is why those people have been released from service. He further admitted that there were irregularities in promotions, and that issue is being looked into. On what steps are being taken to prevent such irregularities, Dass said the issue would be discussed soon.

What is more important is the fact that the Comptroller & Auditor General (CAG) of India in its report pertinent to the Report On State Revenues for the period ending March 2024 has flagged widespread financial irregularities which were reported by Maverick News 30 on the 25th & 27th of May 2026.
