Zelensky Calls for Direct Summit with Putin as Russian Attacks Kill Seven Across Ukraine

Kyiv, June 2026 : Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold direct talks aimed at ending the war that has devastated Ukraine for more than four years, while fresh Russian drone attacks killed at least seven people and caused significant damage across the country.

In an open letter released on Thursday and shared with several international partners, including the United States, Zelensky urged Putin to meet personally and begin a serious effort to secure peace. The Ukrainian leader argued that both nations had endured immense hardship and that the time had come to pursue a diplomatic solution.

Zelensky claimed that many Russians had grown weary of the consequences of the conflict, including inflation, fuel shortages and continued Ukrainian missile and drone strikes. He said a direct dialogue between the two leaders could provide a pathway toward ending the war.

The Ukrainian president stressed that the international community should not delay peace efforts, particularly at a time when global attention has increasingly shifted towards tensions involving Iran. Waiting for the conflict in Europe to once again become a central international priority would be a mistake, he said.

According to Zelensky, any meaningful peace process must begin with a ceasefire along the front lines. He proposed a complete halt to hostilities for the duration of negotiations, describing such an arrangement as standard diplomatic practice. He also suggested that the United States could help monitor and verify compliance with a ceasefire agreement.

The Ukrainian leader further proposed setting a specific date for a summit and suggested several potential venues for the meeting, including Switzerland, Turkey and countries in the Arab world, all of which have previously hosted important diplomatic negotiations.

While Zelensky renewed his push for diplomacy, fighting on the ground continued unabated. Russian forces launched hundreds of drones against Ukrainian targets between late Thursday and early Friday, according to Ukrainian authorities. The attacks reportedly killed seven people and caused extensive damage to civilian infrastructure.

Among the facilities hit was a factory belonging to a major Ukrainian dairy producer known for manufacturing milk products for children. Images released by Ukraine’s emergency services showed parts of the building destroyed, with flames visible inside the damaged structure.

The conflict also spilled into maritime areas. Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry reported that five Azerbaijani nationals were killed and three others wounded in a drone attack on two foreign cargo vessels operating in the Sea of Azov. Russia accused Ukraine of carrying out the strike.

Ukraine’s drone forces later confirmed attacks on vessels allegedly transporting illegal cargo in the area but did not directly address reports regarding casualties or the statements issued by Moscow and Baku.

Meanwhile, a sea drone exploded early Friday in Romania’s Black Sea port city of Constanta without causing injuries. The Russian Embassy in Romania claimed the drone was of Ukrainian origin.

The latest developments underscore the continued intensity of the conflict even as diplomatic appeals for direct negotiations gain renewed attention. With both sides maintaining military pressure, prospects for a breakthrough remain uncertain despite Zelensky’s call for face-to-face talks with Putin.
