US Approves $428 Million Defence Support Packages for India, Strengthening Strategic Partnership
Washington, June 2026 : The United States has approved two major defence support packages for India worth a combined $428.2 million, further reinforcing the growing strategic and military partnership between the two countries. The proposed agreements focus on long-term maintenance, logistics and operational support for India’s existing military platforms, including M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers and AH-64E Apache attack helicopters.
The approvals were announced through notifications issued by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) and forwarded to the US Congress. The packages do not involve the purchase of new weapon systems but are aimed at ensuring the continued operational readiness and effectiveness of key defence assets already in service with the Indian Armed Forces.
The larger of the two proposals, valued at $230 million, is intended to provide long-term sustainment support for India’s fleet of M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers. The package includes spare parts, repair and return services, technical assistance, training programmes, field service representatives, depot-level maintenance capabilities and other logistical support requirements.
In its policy justification, the Pentagon emphasized that the proposed sale aligns with American foreign policy and national security objectives. It noted that strengthening India’s defence capabilities contributes to regional stability and enhances security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
According to the Pentagon, the package will help India address both current and emerging security challenges while improving homeland defence capabilities and regional deterrence. The principal contractor for the M777A2 support programme is BAE Systems, headquartered in Cumbria, United Kingdom.
The Pentagon also clarified that the implementation of the agreement would not require the deployment of additional US government personnel or contractor representatives to India.
The second package, worth $198.2 million, focuses on follow-on support for India’s fleet of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, one of the most advanced combat helicopter platforms in the world. The support package includes engineering assistance, technical services, logistics support, training, maintenance solutions, technical publications and other programme management services.
The principal contractors for the Apache package are Boeing, based in Arlington, Virginia, and Lockheed Martin, headquartered in Orlando, Florida. US officials stated that the agreement would have no negative impact on American military readiness and would further strengthen defence cooperation between Washington and New Delhi.
Both notifications reiterated that India remains a key defence partner and an important force for stability, peace and economic progress across the Indo-Pacific and South Asian regions. The Pentagon also highlighted that the support packages would significantly enhance India’s ability to maintain operational preparedness and respond effectively to evolving regional security challenges.
Notably, neither proposal involves the transfer of Major Defence Equipment, and no offset agreements have been identified at this stage. The purchases will be financed through India’s national defence budget.
The approvals reflect the steady expansion of defence ties between India and the United States over the past two decades. Bilateral defence trade, which was negligible in the early 2000s, has now surpassed $20 billion, making India one of Washington’s most significant security partners.
Beyond defence sales, the two countries have strengthened cooperation through joint military exercises, intelligence sharing, defence technology collaborations and logistics agreements. The latest support packages are expected to further deepen interoperability between the armed forces of the two democracies while reinforcing their shared commitment to maintaining stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
