Trump Says Iran Has Agreed Not to Pursue Nuclear Weapons Ahead of Doha Talks
Washington, June 2026 : US President Donald Trump said Iran has agreed not to acquire a nuclear weapon ahead of a fresh round of negotiations in Doha, expressing optimism about the diplomatic process while asserting that the United States would not permit Tehran to develop nuclear arms.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office before signing a presidential memorandum on vehicle repairs, Trump said US officials were travelling to Qatar for talks with Iranian representatives scheduled for Tuesday.
“There’ll be a meeting on that tomorrow, in Doha. We’ll see how that goes,” Trump said. “The meeting in Doha is going to be perhaps important, perhaps not. We’re going to find out.”
The President struck a confident tone regarding both the diplomatic negotiations and recent military developments involving Iran, suggesting that the United States had gained a significant advantage.
“We’re winning militarily. It’s almost won militarily, I would say,” Trump said, without elaborating on the military operations he was referring to.
Reiterating Washington’s long-standing position, Trump said the primary objective of the talks remained the complete denuclearisation of Iran.
“It’s really very simple; it’s the denuclearization of Iran. We don’t want them to have a nuclear weapon, and they’re not going to have a nuclear weapon, and they’ve agreed to that, in all fairness,” he said.
However, the President did not provide further details regarding Iran’s reported agreement or clarify whether a formal understanding had been reached between the two countries. He also declined to outline the specific agenda for the Doha negotiations.
The upcoming meeting in Qatar is expected to be another significant step in ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at addressing concerns surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme, although both Washington and Tehran have remained guarded about the scope and expected outcomes of the talks.
Before taking questions on foreign policy, Trump also commented on developments in global energy markets, linking declining oil prices to the situation involving Iran.
“Oil prices are way down. We hit $69 today. It was higher than that prior to the denuclearization of Iran,” he said, suggesting that geopolitical developments had contributed to easing market concerns.
The President’s remarks on Iran came during an event focused primarily on domestic policy, where he signed a presidential memorandum aimed at expanding consumers’ ability to repair their own vehicles and increasing competition in the aftermarket automotive parts industry.
The memorandum directs the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to support what the administration has described as the “right to repair” by removing regulatory barriers that limit independent vehicle repairs.
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, who joined Trump at the signing ceremony, said the directive would protect Americans’ freedom to repair their own vehicles, encourage greater competition in the automotive repair sector, and end what he described as California’s dominance over third-party certification of aftermarket automobile parts.
Following the signing ceremony, the White House event quickly shifted to foreign policy as reporters questioned Trump extensively about Iran and the forthcoming Doha talks. The discussion later broadened to include a range of domestic issues, including election laws, recent Supreme Court rulings, immigration policy and other key priorities of the administration.
Trump’s latest comments underscore the administration’s continued emphasis on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons while pursuing diplomatic engagement alongside sustained strategic pressure. The outcome of the Doha negotiations is expected to be closely watched as both sides seek to determine whether further progress can be achieved on one of the world’s most sensitive security issues.
