Trump Unveils ‘Freedom 250 Grand Prix’ in Washington as Highlight of America’s 250th Anniversary Celebrations
Washington, July 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Monday announced the launch of the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix, a first-of-its-kind IndyCar street race that will be held through the heart of Washington, D.C., next month as part of the nationwide celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. Describing it as a landmark sporting event, Trump predicted the race would become one of the biggest spectacles in global motorsport.
Speaking at the White House alongside Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Penske Corporation Chairman Roger Penske, and several leading IndyCar drivers, Trump said the two-day event would take place on August 22 and 23, with the racecourse stretching along the historic Pennsylvania Avenue and around the iconic National Mall.
Calling it a celebration unlike any other, Trump said the Freedom 250 Grand Prix would combine high-speed motorsport with the rich historical backdrop of the nation’s capital.
“As we count down to the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, this will be like no other race ever held,” Trump said. “I don’t think anything will ever top what we’re going to witness. It’s going to be one of the most unforgettable racing events the world has ever seen.”
He noted that IndyCars would race at speeds exceeding 190 miles per hour on a specially designed street circuit running through one of America’s most recognisable locations.
“Pennsylvania Avenue wasn’t exactly built for race cars,” Trump remarked with a smile. “But watching these incredible machines speed through the heart of Washington is going to be a sight for the ages.”
The President said the event would mark the first major top-tier motorsport race ever held in the US capital and would become one of the flagship attractions of the year-long America 250 celebrations commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
Trump also announced that the event would be open to the public free of charge, saying the decision reflected the spirit of the anniversary celebrations.
“The American people are invited to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience,” he said. “We could have charged admission and made a lot of money, but this event is for the country. It’s completely free.”
The President credited motorsport legend Roger Penske and his organisation for relentlessly pursuing the idea over several years. According to Trump, Penske’s team had held dozens of meetings with lawmakers before bringing the proposal directly to the White House.
“They had more than 80 meetings in just 90 days trying to make this happen,” Trump said. “When they finally came to see me, it took about 15 minutes. We knew Pennsylvania Avenue was exactly the right place for this race.”
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the project became a reality only after Trump personally intervened to clear administrative hurdles.
“We had reached a roadblock,” Duffy recalled. “I told Roger Penske that he needed to speak directly with the President because this was too good an idea to let slip away.”
He said Trump immediately approved the proposal after hearing the concept.
“It took one phone call,” Duffy said. “The President simply said, ‘Done. We’re going to celebrate America’s 250th birthday with the first IndyCar race through the nation’s capital.’ That’s exactly what happened.”
Duffy described the race as a fitting addition to the America 250 programme, emphasising that the celebrations would continue well beyond Independence Day.
“America’s birthday doesn’t end on the Fourth of July,” he said. “This anniversary is being celebrated throughout the year, and this race will be one of its defining moments.”
Roger Penske, whose organisation owns both the IndyCar Series and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, said public response to the announcement had already been overwhelming.
“More than 250,000 people have already registered interest in attending,” Penske revealed. “We expect to accommodate around 100,000 spectators on each of the two race days.”
He said the Freedom 250 Grand Prix would not only showcase world-class racing but also highlight innovation, teamwork and athletic excellence.
“This event will demonstrate the technology, speed, partnerships and incredible talent that define IndyCar racing,” Penske said. “The Indianapolis 500 has long been our iconic event, but I truly believe the Freedom 250 Grand Prix will stand alongside it as one of the sport’s signature races.”
Bud Denker, President of Penske Corporation, said the project gathered remarkable momentum after discussions moved to the White House.
“Once the idea shifted to using the streets around the National Mall, everything moved incredibly quickly,” Denker said. “Within 24 hours, we had a draft executive order to review, and just a few days later I was in the President’s office to finalise the approval.”
He added that the winning driver would receive a unique trophy symbolising the nation’s 250th anniversary.
“This will be a trophy unlike any other,” Denker said. “It will celebrate not just a race victory but also our country’s remarkable history.”
The Freedom 250 Grand Prix is one of several marquee events planned under the America 250 initiative, a nationwide programme commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The celebrations include cultural festivals, military displays, educational initiatives, concerts and sporting events across the United States.
Street racing has become increasingly popular in international motorsport, with both Formula One and IndyCar expanding into urban circuits to attract larger audiences and create unique viewing experiences. The Washington race will be the first time an IndyCar event is staged through the ceremonial heart of the US capital, making it one of the most distinctive additions to the 2026 motorsport calendar.
With the combination of historic landmarks, high-speed racing and nationwide celebrations, organisers believe the Freedom 250 Grand Prix could become an enduring fixture on the IndyCar schedule and one of the defining sporting events of America’s 250th anniversary year.
