Chhattisgarh’s Cultural Heritage Shines on the Global Stage: PM Narendra Modi Gifts Bastar’s Dhokra ‘Tree of Life’ Sculpture to New Zealand PM
Raipur, July 202 : Chhattisgarh’s rich tribal heritage and traditional craftsmanship received global recognition when Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented the world-renowned Bastar Dhokra ‘Tree of Life’ metal sculpture to New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon during their bilateral meeting. The diplomatic gift not only showcased India’s rich cultural legacy but also brought Bastar’s centuries-old tribal art to the international spotlight.
The selection of the iconic Dhokra artwork as an official diplomatic gift reflects the growing global recognition of Chhattisgarh’s cultural heritage, traditional craftsmanship, and indigenous tribal artistry. It is a moment of immense pride for the state, as its tribal culture, folk traditions, and handcrafted art now represent India’s cultural identity on the world stage.
The Chhattisgarh Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, has been consistently working towards preserving, promoting, and strengthening the state’s tribal culture, folk arts, and traditional crafts. Through several initiatives and schemes, artisans and craftsmen are being encouraged to showcase their work at national and international platforms. The inclusion of Bastar’s Dhokra art in a high-profile diplomatic exchange reflects the success of these sustained efforts.
The Department of Culture, Government of Chhattisgarh, has also been actively engaged in preserving, documenting, exhibiting, and promoting the state’s invaluable cultural heritage. Under the guidance of Culture Minister Rajesh Agrawal, the department has launched several initiatives aimed at connecting younger generations with traditional folk arts, tribal customs, and indigenous craftsmanship while expanding their national and global reach. The international recognition of the Dhokra sculpture is seen as a validation of these initiatives.
Bastar’s Dhokra art is regarded as one of the world’s oldest metal casting traditions. Crafted using the ancient lost-wax casting technique, it is among the earliest known methods of metal casting in human history. Skilled tribal artisans handcraft each piece individually, ensuring that every sculpture is unique in design, texture, and artistic expression. Passed down through generations, the craft reflects the cultural identity, creativity, and philosophy of Bastar’s tribal communities.
The Tree of Life sculpture gifted by Prime Minister Modi is more than an artistic creation. It symbolises the Indian philosophy of harmony between humanity and nature. Representing interconnectedness, renewal, prosperity, and ecological balance, the sculpture embodies the concept of the Kalpavriksha, the mythical wish-fulfilling tree in Indian tradition. It also resonates with the Whakapapa philosophy of New Zealand’s Māori community, which emphasises the deep relationship between life, ancestry, and nature. As such, the artwork serves as a powerful symbol of cultural dialogue and shared human values.
Bastar’s Dhokra tradition is not merely a handicraft but an expression of Chhattisgarh’s tribal heritage, indigenous beliefs, respect for nature, and sustainable way of life. It also supports the livelihoods of local artisans while promoting environmentally friendly handcrafted products. Every sculpture reflects the community’s creativity, close bond with nature, and enduring cultural traditions.
The Prime Minister’s decision to present the Dhokra Tree of Life as an official diplomatic gift is being viewed as a significant recognition of Chhattisgarh’s cultural strength on the global stage. It is expected to encourage tribal artisans, open new international markets for traditional handicrafts, and further enhance the global profile of Chhattisgarh’s rich art, culture, and tribal heritage.
Today, the Bastar Dhokra Tree of Life is more than just a diplomatic gift—it has become a global ambassador of Chhattisgarh’s cultural identity, tribal pride, traditional craftsmanship, and India’s timeless civilisational heritage.
