Jasprit Bumrah Returns in Style, Becomes India’s Most Successful ODI Bowler in England
Birmingham, July 2026 : Star Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah marked his return to One-Day International cricket in spectacular fashion by becoming India’s highest wicket-taker in ODIs on English soil during the first ODI against England at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
Playing his first ODI in 968 days, Bumrah reached a major career milestone by claiming his 150th ODI wicket when he dismissed England captain Harry Brook for just one run. The breakthrough also saw him surpass Ravindra Jadeja’s tally of 30 wickets in England, taking his own count to 31 wickets, the highest by an Indian bowler in the country.
Bumrah now leads the list of Indian ODI wicket-takers in England, ahead of Jadeja (30), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (28), Madan Lal (27) and Mohammed Shami (26), underlining his remarkable success in overseas conditions.
The wicket also helped Bumrah achieve another significant feat. He became the third-fastest Indian bowler to reach 150 ODI wickets in terms of deliveries bowled. The pace spearhead reached the milestone in 4,605 balls, trailing only Mohammed Shami (4,070 balls) and Kuldeep Yadav (4,513 balls). He accomplished the landmark quicker than former Indian pacers Ajit Agarkar (5,027 balls) and Irfan Pathan (5,131 balls).
Bumrah also entered an elite global club with the achievement. He is now only the third cricketer in international cricket to complete the rare double of 200 Test wickets, 150 ODI wickets and 100 T20I wickets, joining Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan and New Zealand pacer Tim Southee.
The Indian fast bowler currently boasts an impressive international record of 234 Test wickets, 150 ODI wickets and 121 T20I wickets, highlighting his consistency across all three formats of the game.
His performances in England have been particularly outstanding. In 17 ODIs played in the country, Bumrah has taken 31 wickets at an excellent average of 21.41 while maintaining an economy rate of 4.44. His finest ODI bowling figures also came against England, when he claimed a sensational 6 for 19 during India’s 2022 tour. Earlier, he was India’s leading wicket-taker in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England, picking up 18 wickets as the team reached the semi-finals.
Bumrah’s memorable return was complemented by an outstanding spell from Axar Patel, who registered career-best ODI figures of 4 for 62 as India bowled England out for 258 in 47.5 overs.
Despite a superb 121-run seventh-wicket partnership between Joe Root (76 not out) and Liam Dawson (68) that rescued England from a middle-order collapse, India’s bowlers maintained control to restrict the hosts to a manageable total.
With Bumrah back leading the pace attack and Axar producing his best-ever ODI spell, India headed into the run chase with confidence in the opening match of the
