Sonam Wangchuk’s Wife Seeks Family Consent for Medical Treatment After Activist Hospitalised

New Delhi, July 2026 : Innovator, education reform advocate and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, on Saturday appealed to doctors at Safdarjung Hospital not to administer any oral or intravenous treatment to her husband without the consent of his family and the medical team that has been monitoring his condition during his prolonged hunger strike.

In a post on social media platform X, Gitanjali said she was present at Safdarjung Hospital after Wangchuk was admitted following a deterioration in his health after more than 20 days of fasting at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

“I am at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi where Sonam Wangchuk has been admitted. Nothing should be administered to him orally or intravenously without the consent of me, his family and the doctors who have been monitoring his health for the past 20 days,” she wrote.

Wangchuk, who had been on an indefinite hunger strike, was shifted to the hospital early Saturday after his health reportedly worsened. The move was carried out following directions from the Delhi High Court and on the advice of medical experts overseeing his condition.

Police personnel reached the protest site at Jantar Mantar in the morning and transferred the activist to the hospital amid protests and sloganeering by his supporters and fellow demonstrators.

Explaining the action, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) said on X that the transfer was undertaken strictly in compliance with the High Court’s directions and expert medical advice.

According to the police, Wangchuk’s deteriorating health required immediate medical attention. The officer also stated that while some protesters attempted to obstruct the exercise, the police acted with maximum restraint and completed the transfer safely. Authorities appealed to the remaining protesters to vacate Jantar Mantar peacefully.

The hospitalisation comes ahead of a scheduled hearing in the Delhi High Court regarding Wangchuk’s health. Earlier this week, the court had directed authorities to conduct daily clinical assessments of the activist, observing that “the life of any citizen is precious” and instructing the Centre to ensure all necessary medical intervention to protect his life.

Wangchuk launched his hunger strike to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. The protest has drawn support from students, activists and several political leaders.

Before being hospitalised, Wangchuk had also announced a peaceful march from Jantar Mantar to Parliament House on July 20, coinciding with the opening day of the Monsoon Session, to press for his demands regarding accountability over the alleged examination irregularities.
