Rodri Confident Spain Can Rise to the Occasion Against Argentina in World Cup Final

New York, July 2026 : Spain captain Rodri believes his team must elevate its game to an even higher level if it hopes to overcome defending champions Argentina and lift the FIFA World Cup 2026 trophy at the MetLife Stadium on Monday. While expressing satisfaction with Spain’s impressive campaign so far, the midfield general insisted that defeating the reigning world champions will require the team’s finest performance yet.

Speaking ahead of the much-anticipated final, Rodri said Spain’s return to the pinnacle of world football is the result of a long-term project built over the past five years. According to him, the team’s success has been driven by steady progress, tactical consistency and confidence gained through major international triumphs, including victories in the UEFA Nations League and the UEFA European Championship.

“We’ve been gradually growing as a team over the last five years,” Rodri said. “Our progress has been a process, and we have continued to improve step by step. We must keep doing the same things that have brought us here.”

Spain arrived at the World Cup believing they had the quality to challenge for the title, and Rodri said that confidence has only strengthened with every passing match. The European champions have enjoyed a remarkable tournament, reaching the final after producing dominant displays against several top-ranked nations.

“Our objective from the beginning was to win the World Cup,” Rodri said. “We were convinced that we had the ability to achieve it. Throughout the tournament we have shown that this team can compete with and defeat the strongest opponents.”

Spain’s defensive record has been particularly impressive. The team has conceded just one goal in seven matches, underlining its tactical discipline and defensive organisation. At the same time, the attack has consistently delivered when required, making Spain one of the most balanced teams in the tournament.

However, Rodri acknowledged that Argentina present a completely different challenge. The defending champions, led by their experienced core, possess the resilience, tactical maturity and winning mentality that come from lifting the World Cup four years ago in Qatar.

The Spanish captain expects the final to be a far more physical encounter than the matches his side has played so far.

“I don’t think you’ve seen the same Spain in every match,” he explained. “The final against Argentina will be different because it will be a much more physical contest. We have to be fully prepared for that challenge.”

Rodri highlighted Spain’s tactical flexibility as one of its greatest strengths, saying the team is capable of adapting its style according to the demands of the game.

“We are known for being able to play in different ways depending on the situation,” he said. “We can dominate possession, defend deep, counter-attack when necessary or attack aggressively. We are a complete team, and that is one of the reasons we have reached the World Cup final.”

Spain booked its place in the title clash with a commanding 2-0 victory over France in the semifinals, a performance Rodri described as one of the finest the national team has produced in recent years. Nevertheless, he believes there is still room for improvement.

“I think the match against France was one of our best performances as a team,” Rodri said. “But against Argentina we have to raise our level even further because they are the world champions. I am confident that we can do that.”

Monday’s final presents Spain with an opportunity to claim only its second FIFA World Cup title, having previously lifted the trophy in 2010. Argentina, meanwhile, will be aiming to successfully defend the title it won in Qatar in 2022 and secure back-to-back World Cup triumphs.

With two of international football’s most accomplished teams set to battle for the sport’s biggest prize, the World Cup final promises to deliver a memorable contest, with Spain hoping its years of preparation can finally culminate in global glory.
