Trump Says Iran Talks Are a ‘Last Chance’, Demands Hormuz Reopening

Washington, Aug 2026 : US President Donald Trump said Monday that talks with Iran are currently underway, describing the discussions as a “last chance” for Tehran to reach an agreement with Washington and warning that the two sides could move quickly towards either a deal or further confrontation.

Speaking to reporters at the White House Oval Office, Trump said the talks were taking place at Iran’s request and had received backing from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, among other countries.

“We’re talking and we’re talking at the request of Iran,” Trump said, adding that he believed there was a possibility of reaching an agreement but wanted to give Tehran “every last chance” to sign what he described as a good document.

Asked about the progress of the discussions, Trump said developments could become clear within a day or two.

“You find out today or tomorrow … they’re going to go quickly one way or the other,” he said.

Trump indicated that the reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz was one of the immediate issues being discussed. According to the US President, the first phase of any potential understanding would involve ensuring that the waterway is completely open, potentially as early as Tuesday.

“And phase two is we then will talk about the nuclear capacity,” Trump said, reiterating his demand for the denuclearisation of Iran. He acknowledged that discussions on the nuclear issue would take considerably longer.

Trump also issued a sharp criticism of the Iranian leadership earlier in the day, accusing Tehran of being “unbelievably duplicitous” over the reported talks.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that Iranian officials had requested a meeting and that discussions had begun, while simultaneously publicly denying that negotiations with Washington were taking place.

He said Iran was telling the public that it was not holding discussions with the United States and was dealing only with Oman.

The remarks came amid conflicting statements from Washington and Tehran over the status of diplomatic contacts.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said in Tehran on Monday that Iran was not currently engaged in negotiations with the United States. He confirmed, however, that Tehran was holding discussions with Oman concerning the Strait of Hormuz.

The conflicting accounts highlight the uncertainty surrounding diplomatic efforts between Iran and the US, particularly as tensions remain high over the strategic waterway and Iran’s nuclear programme.

While Trump presented the contacts as an opportunity for Tehran to reach a comprehensive agreement, Iranian officials have maintained a different position regarding the nature and scope of the ongoing discussions.

With Trump saying that developments could emerge within hours, attention is now focused on whether the reported contacts can produce an understanding over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and pave the way for broader discussions on Iran’s nuclear activities.
