Modi Magic Fails in Jharkhand: Hemant and Kalpana Lead a Winning Campaign

The BJP’s trademark “Modi magic” fell short in the Jharkhand Assembly elections, with the party failing to secure a favorable outcome despite the Prime Minister holding six high-profile meetings across five divisions of the state. These rallies were part of the BJP’s extensive campaign, which also included star campaigners such as Chief Ministers from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, serving as Jharkhand BJP in-charge, was present throughout the campaign, holding meetings in nearly every constituency and gathering feedback from party workers. However, these efforts could not sway the electorate.

In contrast, Chief Minister Hemant Soren and his wife, Kalpana Soren, spearheaded a well-coordinated campaign for the opposition alliance. Together, they conducted over 100 meetings, effectively countering BJP’s slogans and presenting their alliance’s manifesto directly to the people. Their grassroots approach resonated with voters, bolstered by the involvement of key national opposition leaders. Congress’s Rahul Gandhi held six meetings, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad addressed one, Tejashwi Yadav led 23 rallies, while Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Sachin Pilot each contributed to the campaign.

This election marked a historic moment in Jharkhand’s political landscape, as the ruling party, led by Hemant Soren, made a strong comeback. Soren attributed the victory to his family’s support, sharing a heartfelt social media post featuring his children with the caption, “Meri Shakti” (My Strength). Meanwhile, Amar Kumar Bauri, the Leader of the Opposition, conceded defeat with a poetic post expressing resilience and commitment to duty, regardless of victory or loss. Bauri was defeated by JMM candidate Umakant Rajak by a significant margin, underscoring the strength of the opposition’s campaign.

The results demonstrate the people’s preference for localized leadership and effective grassroots strategies over high-profile star campaigns. Hemant and Kalpana Soren’s ability to connect with voters proved to be a decisive factor in shaping this electoral outcome.
