Umrangso Mine Tragedy: Rescue Operations Intensify with Helipad Construction
Assam: Rescue efforts for nine workers trapped in a coal mine in the Dima Hasao district have been ramped up with the construction of a helipad near the site of the incident. The helipad, built by the Assam Rifles, is set to enhance coordination and support for the ongoing rescue mission, which involves multiple agencies, including the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and others.
The 32 Assam Rifles Battalion, based in Haflong, began constructing the helipad immediately after the mine collapse on January 6. Given the challenging terrain and poor road connectivity, the helipad has become a critical asset in facilitating the rescue operations. A medical camp has also been established within a 3 km radius of the mine to provide essential aid to both local residents and rescue personnel.
Highlighting the logistical hurdles, local resident Uttam Chhetri noted, “Road connectivity within 3 km of Umrangso is extremely poor. Constructing the helipad was the only viable solution, and Assam Rifles has taken swift action to secure the site.”
Rescue teams are contending with hazardous conditions, including rising water levels within the collapsed mine. Despite Coal India deploying a 500-gpm pump to remove water, progress remains slow. NDRF Commander Inspector Roshan Kumar Singh outlined the difficulties: “The vertical section has been searched, but nothing has been found yet. The water level continues to rise, complicating the operation. This is a joint effort involving the Navy, NDRF, and Indian Army.”
Assam’s Minister of Mines and Minerals, Kaushik Rai, confirmed the recovery of one body so far and stated that the Navy has been called in to support the rescue. “Efforts to drain the water are underway. While some reports suggest 10-12 people are trapped, the exact number will only be confirmed after the water recedes,” Rai said.
Rescuers face mounting challenges, but special diving teams have been deployed to address the perilous conditions underground, ensuring the mission progresses despite the odds.
