Kejriwal Targets BJP Over Electricity Bills, Encourages Voters to Support AAP for Free Power

As the Delhi Assembly elections draw closer, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener and former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is actively campaigning to secure voter support. At a public meeting in Jangpura on Sunday, Kejriwal made a direct appeal to the people, urging them to choose AAP if they want affordable electricity bills and to vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) if they are willing to pay high electricity charges. He asserted, “If you want zero electricity bills, vote for AAP. But if you are okay with high electricity bills, then vote for the BJP. The BJP has already declared that they will end the subsidy on electricity once they form the government… They are against providing free electricity.”

Kejriwal’s remarks come in the context of the AAP’s promise to continue providing subsidized and free electricity in Delhi, a move that has been a key part of their electoral appeal. He further criticized the BJP, accusing them of having an anti-people stance when it comes to providing basic services like electricity.

During his speech, Kejriwal also expressed his gratitude to the people of Jangpura for their continued support over the past decade. “We have received amazing love and support from Jangpura in the last 10 years. That is why I have handed over my dearest Manish Sisodia to all of you. He is like a younger brother to me, my ‘Senapati.’ Together, we will elevate Jangpura’s development to new heights,” Kejriwal stated, encouraging the audience to vote for AAP’s candidate, Manish Sisodia, in the upcoming elections. He promised to expedite pending development work and ensure progress in the constituency.

In a sharp contrast, BJP candidate Parvesh Verma, who is contesting against Kejriwal in the New Delhi assembly constituency, accused Kejriwal of attempting to manipulate voters by distributing money in exchange for votes. Verma alleged that AAP was handing out Rs 500 notes wrapped in calendars to slum dwellers, claiming that such incidents were witnessed in areas like Gandhi Camp. “Police arrested several individuals involved in this activity, and non-cognizable reports (NCR) have been filed. The police have identified thousands of people who are being paid Rs 800 on a daily wage basis to work for AAP. This money is being distributed for votes, and Kejriwal is behind it,” Verma said, pointing fingers at the ruling party for engaging in corrupt practices.

The accusations from the BJP have added fuel to the already intense battle between the two parties as the Delhi Assembly elections approach. The AAP is vying for a third consecutive term in power, while the BJP is determined to regain control of the national capital after several years of AAP governance.

With 699 candidates contesting across 70 assembly seats in Delhi, the political landscape is poised for a fierce contest. The elections will be held in a single phase on February 5, and the results will be announced on February 8. The Congress, once the dominant force in Delhi politics, has faced setbacks in recent years, failing to secure any seats in the last two assembly elections. On the other hand, the AAP has emerged victorious in the 2015 and 2020 elections, winning 67 and 62 seats respectively, while the BJP secured only three and eight seats. As the election date nears, all eyes are on the outcome of this highly anticipated political battle.
