Installation of Lord Jhulelal’s Idol and Construction of a Ghat at Varun Sagar – Shri Devanani
Sindhi Community and Organizations Honor Assembly Speaker for Renaming Foy Sagar to Varun Sagar
Jaipur : The renaming of Foy Sagar Lake in Ajmer—seen as a colonial relic—to Varun Sagar has been met with widespread appreciation from the Sindhi community, various organizations, and other communities. On Sunday evening, at Varun Sagar Lake, Assembly Speaker Shri Vasudev Devanani was honored for this historic decision. On this occasion, Shri Devanani announced that an idol of Lord Jhulelal would be installed in the lake, and a ghat would be constructed for public worship and religious rituals of the Sindhi community. A large number of saints and representatives from Sindhi organizations participated in the event, while Sindhi communities from across the world also sent their congratulations.
A grand felicitation ceremony was held at Varun Sagar Lake on Sunday evening, where the Assembly Speaker declared that a magnificent and massive idol of Lord Jhulelal would be installed in the lake. Additionally, a ghat would be built to facilitate religious offerings and rituals for devotees. The ghat is expected to support the Chaliho Utsav, an important Sindhi religious tradition. The construction will be completed by Cheti Chand, the Sindhi New Year, and dedicated to the community. Shri Devanani emphasized that the Varun Sagar renaming would provide a new identity to the Sindhi community, which endured displacement after the Partition of India.
Shri Devanani stated that renaming Foy Sagar to Varun Sagar was a historic move, freeing the lake from colonial symbolism. He described it as a victory for Sanatan Dharma, made possible by the blessings of saints. This change, he said, would help the Sindhi community preserve its faith and traditions. He further emphasized that Lord Jhulelal is not just revered by the Sindhi community but by all communities, and installing his idol would strengthen India’s cultural heritage. The decision would not only bolster religious devotion but also promote tourism. Additional initiatives, including the development of Ajmer’s gateway, are underway to transform Smart City Ajmer into a major tourist hub. With collective efforts, a more prosperous Ajmer will be built.
He also highlighted past efforts to honor Sindhi heritage in Ajmer, including the establishment of a Sindhu Research Center at Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati University with an investment of ₹2 crore. Additionally, during his tenure as Education Minister, the works of Shaheed Hemu Kalani, Dahar Sen, Sant Kanwar Ram, Sant Teu Ram, and Sant Bhagwan Chand were incorporated into the school curriculum.
