Gulveer Singh Scripts History with Silver in 10,000m at Commonwealth Games

Glasgow, July 2026 : India’s premier long-distance runner Gulveer Singh delivered a stunning performance to win the silver medal in the men’s 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games 2026, producing a breathtaking final-lap sprint to secure his maiden Commonwealth podium finish and create history for Indian athletics.

The 28-year-old clocked 27:49.78, finishing just behind Australia’s Ky Robinson, who claimed the gold medal in 27:48.93. David Mullarkey of the Isle of Man took bronze in 27:50.28, while Kenya’s Edwin Kurgat narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth in 27:50.98, his season’s best performance.

With the silver medal, Gulveer became the first Indian athlete to win a medal in the men’s 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games, adding another milestone to an already impressive international career.

The race unfolded at a measured pace during the early stages, with Gulveer remaining among the leading runners despite a cautious opening lap. He held second position initially and stayed in the top three until just before the halfway mark before slipping to sixth as the pace intensified.

As the field crossed the 5,600-metre mark, Gulveer found himself in ninth place while the front-runners increased the tempo. However, the Indian distance specialist displayed remarkable patience and tactical awareness, conserving energy for the decisive closing stages.

With just 1,000 metres remaining, Gulveer began moving steadily through the field. Entering the final lap in third position, he unleashed a powerful finishing kick that carried him past several rivals and into second place, earning one of the biggest achievements of his career.

Although his winning time was slower than his national record of 27:00.22, set in 2025, the performance showcased his racing intelligence and ability to deliver under pressure against a world-class field.

The silver medal adds to Gulveer’s growing collection of international honours, which already includes a bronze medal in the 10,000m at the 2022 Asian Games and double gold medals in the 5,000m and 10,000m at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea.

Widely regarded as one of India’s finest long-distance runners, Gulveer also holds the national records in the 3,000m and 5,000m, underlining his dominance across multiple distance events.

A serving Naib Subedar in the Grenadiers Regiment of the Indian Army, Gulveer hails from Sirsa village in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district. His journey to international success began on village roads and agricultural trails, where he trained while preparing for recruitment into the Indian Army.

His first major international breakthrough came at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships, where he won bronze in the 5,000m. He followed it with another bronze in the 10,000m at the 2022 Asian Games, before establishing himself as Asia’s leading distance runner with two gold medals at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships.

His historic silver medal in Glasgow further cements his status as one of India’s greatest-ever distance runners and provides another major boost to the country’s athletics campaign at the Commonwealth Games.
