Mumbai : Following the recognition of Marathi as a classical language, the Maharashtra government is taking significant steps to promote and expand its reach. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed the Marathi Language Department to make Marathi literature accessible through audio-visual platforms.
A meeting of the Marathi Language Department was held at Sahyadri Guest House under the chairmanship of Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. The meeting was attended by Marathi Language Minister Uday Samant, MLA Deepak Kesarkar, Additional Chief Secretary to the Deputy CM Asimkumar Gupta, Principal Secretary Navin Sona, Marathi Language Department Secretary Dr. Kiran Kulkarni, Joint Secretary Namdev Bhosale, Language Director Vijaya Donikar, Secretary of the Literature and Culture Board Meenakshi Patil, and Director of the State Marathi Development Institute Dr. Shyamkant Devre, among other senior officials.
Deputy CM Shinde emphasized the need to bring Marathi literature to audio-visual platforms. He stated, “Modern technology is essential for introducing Marathi literature to global Marathi enthusiasts. Making literature available in an audio-visual format will ensure wider accessibility.”
To promote Marathi globally, around 500 Bruhanmandals (overseas Marathi cultural organizations) are actively working towards this cause. The meeting also discussed providing each of these organizations with 500 Marathi books to enhance the appreciation of the language abroad. Deputy CM Shinde expressed confidence that this initiative would increase the global reach of Marathi literature. Additionally, he instructed the department to take necessary steps to install statues of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in locations where Bruhan Maharashtra Mandals are established.
To preserve, promote, and expand Marathi, Deputy CM Shinde suggested implementing various modern initiatives. He recommended setting up QR codes at railway stations, bus stands, and other public places to provide non-Marathi speakers with information about the language. Furthermore, he instructed that a greater number of Marathi books should be made available online to increase accessibility.
