Telangana Allows Muslim Employees to Leave Early During Ramzan; BJP Opposes Move

The Telangana government has issued a circular allowing Muslim employees to leave work an hour early during the holy month of Ramzan. This provision, applicable from March 3 to March 31, permits Muslim employees, except those in essential services, to leave at 4 PM instead of the usual 5 PM.

However, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized the decision, calling it “appeasement politics.” BJP MLA Raja Singh questioned why similar provisions are not extended during Hindu festivals. In response, the Telangana government stated that this is not a new policy, as similar allowances have been granted in previous years.

Chief Secretary Shanti Kumari issued the order, specifying that the relaxation applies to Muslim teachers, contract employees, outsourced workers, and employees of boards and public sector units. However, in cases of emergency, these employees may be required to continue working until 5 PM.

The decision has sparked a political debate, with the ruling government defending the move as a longstanding practice and the opposition accusing it of favoritism.
