Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde Reviews Concrete Road Works in Mumbai

Efforts to Complete Concrete Roads by End of May; Pothole-Free Roads for Mumbaikars During Monsoon – Assurance by Deputy CM Eknath Shinde

Mumbai : To provide a permanent solution to Mumbai’s pothole-ridden roads, a decision has been taken to construct concrete roads across the city. Once completed, these roads will not be dug up, and potholes will not form. Fulfilling the promise of a pothole-free Mumbai is our goal, and the quality of work will not be compromised, said Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. He instructed that all concrete road works should be completed by the end of May.

He also directed that road works from junction to junction be completed before the monsoon and made traffic-worthy. Cleaning of manholes and roadside drainage systems should be prioritized, he added. This afternoon, Deputy CM Shinde inspected ongoing concrete road projects in South Mumbai and the Eastern suburbs, starting from the junction near Bombay Hospital. Inspections were also conducted in C Ward, F North Ward, and M West Ward. Instructions were issued to ensure safe, accident-free, and smooth travel for citizens during the upcoming monsoon.

Also present during the inspection were Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Mangal Prabhat Lodha, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, Additional Commissioner Abhijeet Bangar, and other senior officials.

The implementation of cement concrete roads across Greater Mumbai is progressing effectively. So far, 1,333 kilometers of roads have been concretized. Remaining road works are being carried out in two phases. Deputy CM Shinde informed that 700 kilometers are included in the first phase and that concreting has begun for 400 kilometers under this phase. The project uses M40-grade concrete, known for its high load-bearing capacity.

As part of the BMC’s commitment to pothole-free roads, 1,333 kilometers have already been concretized. The remaining roads are being worked on in two phases:

  • Phase 1: 698 roads (324 kilometers)
  • Phase 2: 1,420 roads (377 kilometers)

Deputy CM Shinde emphasized that these projects must be completed on time and with high quality.

He also instructed all officers to carry out their responsibilities diligently. Any negligence will lead to action, while those performing well will be recognized. Boards displaying the names and contact details of the responsible contractors and officials must be installed at each roadwork site, he said.

The inspection tour began near Bombay Hospital in A Ward and continued to R.S. Sapre Marg in C Ward, Jame Jamshed Road in Matunga (F North Ward), and Road No. 21 in Chembur (M West Ward). Deputy CM Shinde also interacted with local residents during the visit.
