Over 1 Lakh Wells Being Recharged in State

To strengthen Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s “Gyaan Abhiyan” and in the direction of nature, environment, and water conservation, the Madhya Pradesh Government is working as a mission. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan is ongoing. In this campaign, the Panchayat and Rural Development Department has set a target to recharge 1 lakh wells in the state using rainwater under the MNREGA scheme. Recharge pits (Dugwell Recharge Method) are being constructed near the wells. Farmers in the state have also shown awareness in building these recharge pits. Recharging the wells will increase the groundwater level, and farmers will have sufficient water available for irrigation and drinking.

Target Set to Recharge 1,03,000 Wells, Work Begins in Over 75,000 Wells

In the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan, the Panchayat and Rural Development Department has set a target to recharge 1,03,000 wells across the state. Of these, work has already begun on constructing recharge pits for over 75,000 wells. In Khandwa district, more recharge pits have been built than the target given. Once the recharge pits are constructed, the groundwater level will rise, and the possibility of wells drying up in the summer will also decrease.

Method for Creating Well Recharge Pits

A special structure has been designed for creating the well recharge pits. The pit will contain layers of stones and coarse sand. The pit will be constructed 3 to 6 meters away from the well. A 3-meter long, 3-meter wide, and 8-meter deep pit will be dug. An 8-inch pipe will be placed in the pit and directed into the well. At the end of the pipe in the well, an elbow joint will be fixed, and a 1-foot-long pipe will be installed downwards. This will then be connected to the well through a pipeline.

Since March 30, under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Yadav, the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan has been ongoing, and it will continue until June 30. The campaign is focused on collecting rainwater and restoring old water sources. Over the three-month period, the Panchayat and Rural Development Department is working on creating farm-ponds, well recharge pits, check dams, Amrit Sarovars, and other such water conservation projects in all districts of the state.
