Tripura’s Aritra Roy Becomes First from State to Scale Mount Everest
Agartala: In a historic achievement, Aritra Roy has become the first person from Tripura to successfully climb Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak at 8,849 meters. His extraordinary feat was accomplished on May 19 during the 2025 spring climbing season.
Roy’s remarkable journey began with a 1,400-kilometre cycling expedition from Agartala to Phaplu, Nepal. The eco-friendly journey, flagged off by the Assam Rifles on March 15, was part of his larger mission to promote environmental awareness and endurance. He completed the entire expedition in 63 days, which included cycling, acclimatisation, and the final ascent to Everest’s summit.
The Assam Rifles played a crucial role in supporting Roy throughout his mission. They provided logistical assistance, travel coordination, and helped with arrangements in Nepal, allowing Roy to focus fully on the challenges of high-altitude climbing. Their support extended from the early planning stages to the summit push, ensuring smooth coordination with local authorities and expedition teams.
A certified mountaineer and a member of the Agartala Adventure Club, Roy has previously climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa and Mount Elbrus in Europe. With Everest as his next target, he aimed to create history for Tripura. “Nobody from Tripura has climbed Everest before. I was determined to make my state and country proud,” Roy said at the start of his journey.
Climbing Everest required weeks of preparation, acclimatisation to extreme altitudes, and navigating treacherous terrain such as the Hillary Step. Despite unpredictable weather and physical hardships, Roy reached the summit, proudly hoisting the Indian flag in triumph.
His success has sparked widespread celebration across Tripura, where he is being hailed as a local hero. He now joins the elite group of fewer than 500 Indians who have reached the Everest summit.
The expedition highlights Roy’s courage and the strong backing of the Assam Rifles, known not only for their role in national security but also for promoting youth development in Northeast India. Roy’s achievement stands as a proud milestone for Tripura and a lasting inspiration for future adventurers.
