Chennai : Professor Dr. S. Seyaranjan, Deputy Director (Operations) of the Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission, met with Hon’ble Chief Minister and Chairman of the State Planning Commission, Thiru M.K. Stalin today at the Secretariat and submitted four study reports prepared by the commission. Later, he briefed the media regarding the contents of these reports.
First Report – Rural Non-Farm Employment Opportunities
This study examines the growth and challenges in non-farm employment opportunities in rural Tamil Nadu. It is based on a follow-up study conducted 10 years after an initial research project involving 12 villages. The new report analyzes the changes that have occurred over the decade and assesses the progress in creating rural non-farm livelihood options.
Second Report – Progress Towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
This report evaluates Tamil Nadu’s status and achievements in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. It assesses how far Tamil Nadu has come, what targets remain to be achieved by 2030, and outlines an action plan for reaching them. The study contains over 650 pages of detailed insights and was submitted to the Chief Minister, highlighting key achievements, areas of strength, and sectors requiring further attention.
Third Report – Future of Tamil Nadu’s Automotive Industry
Tamil Nadu is a leading state in vehicle manufacturing. The industry is undergoing rapid technological transformation from purely mechanical systems to electronics and electric vehicles, with hybrids becoming more common. The report identifies what Tamil Nadu must do to maintain its leadership in the automotive sector amidst these technological changes. It includes expert opinions from industry stakeholders and presents a comprehensive roadmap for the state’s automotive future.
Fourth Report – Establishing Tamil Nadu as a Knowledge Academy
This study emphasizes Tamil Nadu’s potential to become a global hub for knowledge and innovation. Tamil Nadu has the highest number of students pursuing higher education in India—47%, compared to the national average of 26%. The report highlights the need to create high-quality employment opportunities not only for graduates but also for highly skilled professionals, especially in R&D and high-paying global roles.
It discusses the emergence of Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in India due to the country’s vast talent pool. While cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad are leading in this space, Tamil Nadu has significantly increased the number of its GCCs from 40–50 to over 150 in the last four years. The report outlines strategies to attract more global firms and enhance the ecosystem for research and innovation.
Conclusion
All four reports were submitted to the Hon’ble Chief Minister. Together, they support his vision of achieving a $1 trillion economy for Tamil Nadu. The SDG report ensures that this economic growth is inclusive and benefits everyone. The collective findings aim to guide the state’s strategic planning and policymaking toward that goal.
