Outrage in US as Video Shows Indian Student Manhandled at Outrage in US as Video Shows Indian Student Manhandled at Newark Airport
New York : A deeply troubling video of an Indian student being manhandled by airport authorities at Newark Liberty International Airport in New York has sparked widespread outrage on social media. The Indian Consulate in New York has said it is in contact with local authorities to look into the matter.
The viral video, shared by Indian-American social entrepreneur Kunal Jain on X (formerly Twitter), shows the young student—reportedly from Haryana—being handcuffed and forcefully pinned to the ground by airport staff. Jain wrote, “I saw a young Indian student being deported from Newark airport last night — handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal. He came to chase dreams, not to cause harm.”
In a series of posts, Jain described how the student appeared confused and unable to explain the purpose of his visit clearly to the immigration authorities. “He was supposed to board the same flight with me but never did. I found him confused. The parents of this poor kid will never know what is happening to him,” Jain said, tagging the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C. and India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar.
Jain further noted that the student was speaking in Haryanvi, suggesting he was from Haryana, and expressed concern that immigration authorities were allegedly attempting to portray him as mentally unstable. “I am not crazy; they are trying to make me look crazy,” the student can be heard saying.
According to Jain, such incidents are on the rise. “Three to four similar cases are happening every day. These students get their visas in the morning, fly out, but are deported by evening like criminals for not explaining their purpose properly.”
Reacting to the outrage, the Indian Consulate in New York posted, “We have come across posts on social media claiming that an Indian national is facing difficulties at Newark Liberty International Airport. We are in touch with the local authorities in this regard. The Consulate is always committed to the welfare of Indian nationals.”
