Zoram Entu Meichher Golden Jubilee Seminar Held

Aizawl : The Zoram Entu Meichher Seminar was held today at the School Education Directorate Conference Hall, organized by the Adult Education Wing, in celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Meichher magazine, which has been regularly published by the department for 50 years.

In her inaugural address, Director of School Education Pi Angela Zothanpuii stated that the consistent publication of Meichher is a significant achievement. She emphasized that in this Golden Jubilee year, Mizoram has achieved full literacy, which is a major milestone attributed in part to Meichher’s contributions. She also highlighted that Padma Shri awardee Pu R. Lalrawna, the founding editor of Meichher, played a crucial role in both literature and education, underlining the magazine’s immense value.

Editor Pu T.C. Lalremsiama, in his report, explained the origin of Meichher. Initially titled Zoram Eng, the magazine was first published in March-April 1975, but due to practical and editorial considerations, its name was changed to Meichher starting from October 1975. Counting from the first issue in March 1975 until June 2025, a total of 808 issues have been published.

Printed with government funding, Meichher is published monthly with 3,000 copies per issue. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the print quantity was temporarily reduced to 2,800 copies, but since November 2022, the standard 3,000 copies per month have resumed. The magazine continues to be published under the guidance of the Department Director.

The seminar featured four academic presentations, including:

• Pu F. Vanlalrochana, MPS, Book of the Year 2024 awardee, on the role of Meichher contributors.
• Dr. C. Lalawmpuia Vanchiau, Asst. Professor, Helen Lowry College, on the impact and relevance of Meichher in Mizo literature.
• Pu R. Lallianzuala, Chairman of the Mizo Language Development Board (MLDB), on the role of Meichher in education in Mizoram.
• Dr. H. Laldinmawia, Head, Dept. of Mizo, PUC, on the educational influence of Meichher magazine.

The main Golden Jubilee celebration of Meichher will take place on 26th June 2025 at Vanapa Hall, Aizawl.

Today’s seminar was attended by departmental officers, representatives from the Mizo Academy of Letters, Mizo Writers Association, MUP, MHIP, Mizo Literature & Language Teachers Academy, Mizo Poetry Society, Higher Secondary lecturers, and students.
