Alcaraz Storms into Wimbledon Quarterfinals with Gritty Win over Rublev

Spanish star eyes third straight title as he sets up a last-eight clash with Britain’s Cameron Norrie

Carlos Alcaraz continued his dominant run at Wimbledon 2025, defeating 14th seed Andrey Rublev in four sets—6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4—on Sunday to book a spot in the quarterfinals. With this hard-fought victory, Alcaraz has now notched up 22 consecutive wins overall and remains unbeaten in his last 18 matches at the All England Club.

The two-time Wimbledon champion, who is aiming for his third consecutive title at SW19, overcame an early setback after dropping the first set in a tiebreak. But the Spanish world No. 2 bounced back confidently, showcasing his trademark court coverage, aggressive shot-making, and mental resilience. The win sets up a tantalising quarterfinal clash against Britain’s Cameron Norrie.

Norrie, currently ranked back in the ATP top 50 and a former world No. 8, outlasted qualifier Nicolas Jarry in a gripping five-setter on Court No. 1. The upcoming quarterfinal will be a rematch of their 2023 Rio Open final, which Norrie won.

Speaking after his win, Alcaraz reflected on the conditions at this year’s tournament, saying, “It’s a different tennis at Wimbledon this year… a different feeling. For me, it’s a little slower, the balls are a little slower. But today I played my best match ever in the tournament. I feel very good.”

The match against Rublev was Alcaraz’s second-longest outing at this year’s championships, following a grueling four-and-a-half-hour victory in the opening round. Before this, he had dispatched Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in four sets—6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4—marking his 21st straight match win.

Alcaraz is on the verge of history. If he clinches the title, he will become only the second man after the legendary Bjorn Borg to win both the French Open and Wimbledon in back-to-back years. With trophies already secured at Roland Garros, the ATP Masters events in Monte Carlo and Rome, and the Queen’s Club Championships, the Spaniard’s 2025 season is shaping up to be unforgettable.

Having last tasted defeat in the Barcelona final this April, Alcaraz looks increasingly poised to extend his dominance—and add another Wimbledon title to his growing legacy.
