“KP Sharma Oli Returns as Nepal’s Prime Minister Amid Political Revival”

KP Sharma Oli, leader of Nepal’s left-wing Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) CPN-UML, has been appointed as the country’s new prime minister, bringing an end to weeks of political uncertainty, according to reports from local media.

President Ramchandra Paudel appointed Oli to the premier position for a fourth term, as reported by the Kathmandu Post. Oli previously served as prime minister from 2015 to 2016 and again from February 2018 to July 2021, across two separate terms. Oli secured the appointment by garnering support from 166 lawmakers, including 88 from the Nepali Congress and 78 from the UML.

With the minimum requirement of 138 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives to form a government, Oli’s appointment was cemented. Oli and his Cabinet ministers are set to be sworn in on Today, following constitutional procedures.

According to Nepal’s Constitution, Oli must seek a vote of confidence from parliament within 30 days of assuming office. The political landscape in the Himalayan nation had been in turmoil since the ousting of Oli’s predecessor Pushpa Kamal Dahal last month, precipitated by the UML’s withdrawal of support from the ruling coalition.
