Thousands Welcome Egypt’s World Cup Heroes After Historic Campaign
Cairo, July 2026 : Thousands of jubilant football fans lined the streets and gathered at Alamein International Airport on Friday to give Egypt’s national football team a rousing welcome home following the country’s best-ever FIFA World Cup campaign. Waving Egyptian flags, singing patriotic songs and carrying banners praising the team’s remarkable achievements, supporters celebrated the Pharaohs despite their heartbreaking exit in the Round of 16.
The atmosphere was festive as players and coaching staff returned from North America after leading Egypt to its finest performance in World Cup history. The team secured its first-ever victory at football’s biggest tournament and progressed to the knockout stages for the first time, creating a memorable chapter in Egyptian football.
Fans held placards reading “Egypt’s Men Made Us Proud” and displayed large portraits of captain Mohamed Salah alongside messages thanking him for his inspirational leadership throughout the tournament. Salah once again proved to be the face of Egyptian football, leading the team with determination during their historic run.
Following their arrival, the players boarded an open-top bus for a celebratory parade through the streets of New Alamein. Thousands of supporters lined the route, cheering, waving flags and applauding the squad as they acknowledged the crowds during the victory procession.
The celebrations are set to continue, with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi scheduled to host a special reception for the players, coaching staff and team officials to honour their achievements on Saturday.
Among the large crowd were supporters carrying posters of head coach Hossam Hassan draped with Palestinian flags. The gesture reflected appreciation for the former Egyptian striker’s vocal support for the Palestinian cause throughout the tournament. Hassan frequently carried a Palestinian flag onto the pitch after matches and reiterated his support for Palestinian rights during several media interactions, earning admiration from many supporters.
Although Egypt’s World Cup journey ended in dramatic fashion with a 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16, fans chose to celebrate rather than dwell on the disappointment. Egypt appeared on course for one of the tournament’s biggest upsets after racing to a 2-0 lead before Lionel Messi inspired a stunning Argentine comeback, with the South American champions scoring three goals in the final 11 minutes to snatch victory.
Despite the painful defeat, Egypt returned home with immense pride after producing a campaign that surpassed all previous World Cup performances. The Pharaohs opened their tournament with a memorable victory over New Zealand in the group stage before overcoming Australia in a tense penalty shootout in the Round of 32 to reach the knockout phase.
Recognising the team’s remarkable progress, the Egyptian Football Association announced before the squad’s return that head coach Hossam Hassan and his twin brother, assistant coach Ibrahim Hassan, had been handed new contracts. While the federation did not reveal the duration of the agreements, local media reported that both had signed extensions keeping them with the national team until 2030.
Since taking charge in 2024, the 59-year-old Hossam Hassan has transformed Egypt into one of Africa’s most competitive sides. Under his leadership, Egypt reached the semifinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, ended an eight-year absence from the FIFA World Cup and compiled an impressive record of 20 victories, nine draws and just six defeats.
The emotional homecoming reflected the nation’s appreciation for a team that exceeded expectations and restored belief in Egyptian football. While the dream of lifting the World Cup came to an end, the Pharaohs have returned as national heroes, with supporters hopeful that this historic campaign marks the beginning of a new era of success on the international stage.
