Visakhapatnam Port Handles Over Half of India’s Seafood Exports, Emerges as Top Marine Export Gateway

Amaravati, July 2026 : Visakhapatnam Port has strengthened its position as India’s leading marine export gateway, accounting for more than half of the country’s seafood exports during the 2024-25 financial year, the Central government informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

The data, shared in response to a question raised by Lok Sabha MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy, highlighted the remarkable growth of the Andhra Pradesh port in handling marine exports. According to the figures, the port’s share of India’s seafood exports increased sharply from 29.67 per cent in 2023-24 to 50.87 per cent in 2024-25, registering a jump of over 21 percentage points within a year.

Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada, citing data from the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), informed Parliament that marine product exports through Visakhapatnam Port were valued at $2.19 billion out of India’s total seafood exports of $7.38 billion during FY2024. The port continued to dominate the sector by handling 50.87 per cent of the country’s seafood exports in FY2025 and maintaining a robust 48.89 per cent share in FY2026.

According to a statement issued by the Andhra Pradesh government, the figures underline the state’s growing prominence in global seafood trade and reflect the rapid expansion of its export capabilities.

The state government credited the growth to renewed momentum under the TDP-led NDA government, stating that Visakhapatnam Port has evolved into a key driver of India’s marine exports. It noted that the port’s performance demonstrates Andhra Pradesh’s increasing competitiveness in international markets and the strengthening of its export infrastructure.

The government also contrasted the latest performance with the previous year, stating that the port’s dramatic rise in export share reflects significant progress in marine export logistics and infrastructure development. Handling more than half of India’s seafood exports in 2024-25, the port has emerged as a vital hub connecting Indian seafood producers with international markets.

The parliamentary reply further highlighted the strategic role of Visakhapatnam Port under the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative. The Centre said the port serves as an important export gateway for products identified under the programme, which aims to promote district-specific products and expand their reach in domestic and international markets.

To boost exports, the government is supporting producers through participation in domestic and international trade exhibitions, buyer-seller meets, the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) ODOP Bazaar, and outreach initiatives involving Indian Missions abroad. These measures are intended to improve market access and create new export opportunities for producers from Andhra Pradesh.

The Centre also informed Parliament that Andhra Pradesh has identified 99 One District One Product (ODOP) items across its 26 districts, highlighting the state’s emphasis on promoting local industries, value-added products and export-oriented growth.

With Visakhapatnam Port maintaining nearly half of India’s seafood export share even in FY2026, the latest figures reinforce its status as the country’s premier marine export gateway and underscore Andhra Pradesh’s expanding role in strengthening India’s position in the global seafood market.
