Rahul Gandhi Urges Respect for Student Voices, Says Jantar Mantar Protests Reflect India’s Future

New Delhi, July 2026 : Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday urged all political parties to respect the voices of students, saying the recent protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar reflected the aspirations and concerns of India’s future generation rather than anger or violence.

Participating in the discussion on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, Rahul Gandhi said the student-led demonstrations should be viewed as a positive expression of democratic values and not dismissed as unrest. He maintained that the protests represented the hopes of young Indians seeking accountability and fairness in the country’s examination system.

“I was very excited and reassured by what the future of this country did on our streets,” Rahul Gandhi said in the Lok Sabha. “What we witnessed was not anger, violence or hatred. It was the expression of the future generation of India. Every political party, including the BJP, should respect that expression.”

The Congress leader suggested that even BJP leaders would better understand the students’ sentiments if they spoke to their own children. According to him, young people across political backgrounds would empathise with the protesters and recognise the legitimacy of their concerns.

“There is nothing wrong with what has happened. In fact, every Indian should feel proud of these students for expressing themselves peacefully,” he remarked.

Rahul Gandhi also shared an interaction with a young woman participating in the Jantar Mantar protests, describing it as one of the most insightful conversations he had recently. He said he asked the student what being a “student” truly meant.

According to Rahul Gandhi, the student replied that a true learner is someone who keeps an open mind and an open heart, acknowledging that knowledge is constantly evolving and that no individual can claim to know everything. She explained that a student understands that learning never ends because the world itself is continuously changing.

He said the student contrasted this with another type of individual—someone who believes they already possess complete knowledge, refuses to listen to others, and assumes that truth resides only within themselves. Such people, she suggested, believe they know everything and reject new ideas.

Rahul Gandhi recounted that when he asked what she called such individuals, the student simply replied, “I call them idiots.”

The Congress leader used the anecdote to underline the importance of humility, openness and continuous learning, particularly in public life. He argued that democratic societies flourish when leaders are willing to listen to young voices and remain receptive to new ideas rather than assuming they have all the answers.

His remarks came during a debate focused on strengthening safeguards against examination malpractices. Rahul Gandhi reiterated that the concerns raised by students deserved serious attention and urged the government to engage constructively with the country’s youth instead of dismissing their protests.

The discussion on the amendment bill witnessed sharp exchanges between the treasury and opposition benches, with education reforms and the concerns of students emerging as key themes of the debate.
