Review of Smart Meter Installation – Install More Check Meters: Energy Minister

Jaipur, Aug 2025 : Minister of State for Energy (Independent Charge) Shri Hiralal Nagar on Thursday conducted a high-level review of smart meter installation at Vidyut Bhawan. He instructed the representatives of Advanced Metering Infrastructure Service Providers (AMISP) to accelerate progress in the work.

The Energy Minister directed that a larger number of check meters should be installed so that consumers do not harbor any misconceptions about smart meters. Shri Nagar said that smart meters are beneficial as they ensure transparency and accuracy in electricity consumption, while making billing free from human intervention. He emphasized that AMISPs should intensify IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) activities to spread awareness among maximum consumers about the benefits of smart meters.

Clear Backlog; Installation Began in 2020–21

Shri Nagar said that the installation of smart meters in the state began in 2020–21. During the previous government’s tenure, more than 5.52 lakh smart meters were installed. At present, under the RDSS scheme, excluding agricultural consumers, more than 1.43 crore electricity consumers are being covered for smart meter installation. Since April 2025, over 5.60 lakh smart meters have been installed across the three discoms.

He instructed the AMISPs to ensure progress in line with the terms of the work order and assured that the department would provide necessary cooperation as per rules to speed up the work. He also directed that another review meeting should be convened within the next month.

In the meeting, Principal Secretary (Energy) Shri Ajitabh Sharma instructed to increase the number of field teams, expand consumer awareness activities, and prepare an effective action plan to achieve the targets. Chairperson of Discoms, Ms. Arti Dogra, presented details of the progress made so far.
