MNREGA-Constructed Pond Becomes a Source of Irrigation and Livelihood for Farmers

Raipur : Under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), people in rural areas are not only gaining employment but also benefitting from the creation of durable assets that support livelihoods. One such example is an agricultural pond built under MNREGA in Adbandha village of Simga block, Balodabazar-Bhatapara district. This pond has become a reliable source of irrigation and income for farmer Somit Sahu.

In Adbandha village, the first agricultural pond was constructed under MNREGA at a cost of about ₹2.5 lakh. Covering an area of nearly 600 square meters, the project was executed by the Gram Panchayat itself as the implementing agency. The construction of the pond has not only helped in water conservation but has also inspired other villagers to build similar ponds. Additionally, fish farming in the pond is gaining popularity as an extra source of income.

Farmer Somit Sahu shared that earlier he struggled to sustain his livelihood due to lack of proper resources. However, with the construction of the pond, he has been able to take up fish farming, which has provided additional earnings and improved his family’s income. Moreover, the availability of irrigation has boosted agricultural productivity. He added, “The pond built under MNREGA has brought a significant change in my life. I no longer need to wander in search of daily work, as it has ensured both livelihood and stability for me.”
