Netanyahu Expresses Regret for Israeli Strike in Qatar; Trump Pushes for Trilateral Cooperation
Washington, Sept 2025 : Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday expressed “deep regret” over Israel’s recent missile strike in Qatar, which inadvertently killed a Qatari serviceman, during a phone call facilitated by US President Donald Trump with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani. The call aimed to reset strained relations and foster regional stability.
A White House statement said, “Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed his deep regret that Israel’s missile strike against Hamas targets in Qatar unintentionally killed a Qatari serviceman. He further regretted that in targeting Hamas leadership during hostage negotiations, Israel violated Qatari sovereignty and affirmed that Israel will not conduct such an attack again in the future.”
Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman welcomed Netanyahu’s assurances, emphasizing Qatar’s continued commitment to regional security and stability.
The statement added that both leaders agreed to a proposal from President Trump to create a trilateral coordination mechanism aimed at improving communication, resolving grievances, and preventing future security threats. “They underscored their shared commitment to working constructively, clearing misperceptions, and building on longstanding ties with the United States,” the White House said.
The discussion also included a focus on Gaza, with all sides reviewing a proposal to end the ongoing conflict.
The strike, which occurred on September 9, targeted Hamas leadership in Qatar while the group was reportedly considering a US-backed ceasefire in Gaza. Hamas later claimed that none of its senior officials were harmed.
President Trump sought to distance the US from the attack, stating on Truth Social, “This was a decision made by Prime Minister Netanyahu; it was not a decision made by me.” While he acknowledged that Israel’s unilateral action “does not advance Israel or America’s goals,” Trump reiterated that “eliminating Hamas, which has profited off the misery of those living in Gaza, is a worthy goal.”
The phone call represents an effort by all three leaders to manage tensions, reaffirm diplomatic channels, and prevent future incidents while balancing ongoing conflict concerns in the region.
