Bill Gates Hails India as a Global Innovation Powerhouse Benefiting the Global South
New Delhi, Oct 2025 : Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has lauded India as a global innovation leader, noting that the country’s pioneering and cost-effective solutions have the potential to transform millions of lives across the Global South, according to a recent report by India Narrative.
Speaking at an event in Seattle, United States, organised by the Indian Consulate General in collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Microsoft co-founder praised India’s rapid strides in technology, healthcare, and digital innovation. Gates expressed optimism about continuing his foundation’s partnership with India on its path toward Viksit Bharat 2047—the government’s vision of a developed India by its centenary of independence.
“It’s fitting that we’re coming together on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi,” Gates said. “The ideals he championed—the equality and dignity of every person—are foundational to the work we do. Today, India stands as a global leader in innovation, pioneering solutions that can save and improve millions of lives across the Global South. We look forward to continuing to partner with India on its journey toward Viksit Bharat 2047.”
Driving Global Change Through Affordable Innovation
According to the report, India’s innovation leadership is most evident in healthcare, where it has significantly enhanced access and affordability. The country has emerged as a world leader in low-cost vaccine manufacturing, supplying life-saving vaccines to millions across developing nations.
India’s groundbreaking saliva-based tuberculosis diagnostic test, priced under $2, is another example of cost-effective innovation. The test, which can revolutionise disease detection in resource-poor settings, has earned recognition and support from Gates and the broader global health community.
Moreover, India’s digital public infrastructure (DPI) — particularly its unified payments interface (UPI) and health-focused digital platforms — has transformed healthcare delivery. The integration of AI-powered tools in rural health services is improving maternal care, enabling early disease detection, and enhancing patient data management — vital developments for a nation with vast and complex healthcare demands.
Strengthening Research and Technology for the Future
India’s government is further bolstering innovation through initiatives such as the Anusandhan National Research Fund, which allocates Rs 1 lakh crore to advance basic research and prototype development. The fund is expected to strengthen the nation’s research ecosystem and promote collaborations between academia and industry.
Beyond healthcare, India’s embrace of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, quantum computing, and clean energy showcases its growing influence in shaping the future of global innovation. The expansion of 5G networks and ongoing research into 6G technologies underline India’s ambition to lead the next wave of connectivity-driven progress.
A Thriving Innovation Ecosystem
India’s startup ecosystem — one of the fastest-growing in the world — exemplifies its entrepreneurial spirit. With over 111 unicorns (startups valued above $1 billion), India continues to attract investment and global attention for its dynamic innovation culture.
The report also noted that Indian universities are producing high-quality scientific research, ranking India as the second-leading middle-income economy in terms of scientific output and publications.
Bill Gates’ endorsement, the report concluded, underscores how India’s innovations extend far beyond national borders, offering scalable and sustainable solutions to challenges faced by countries across the Global South.
