Nobel Peace Prize 2025 to Be Announced Amid Gaza Ceasefire Breakthrough

Oslo, Oct 2025 : The recipient of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday at 11:00 AM local time (0900 GMT) in Oslo, Norway, just a day after Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire and hostage release agreement that could help end the over two-year conflict in Gaza. While US President Donald Trump has claimed credit for facilitating the breakthrough, experts say the timing of the deal is too late to influence this year’s prize decision.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee, composed of five members, held their final meeting on Monday, finalizing the statement explaining their choice. Historian and Peace Prize expert Asle Sveen emphasized that the Gaza deal “has absolutely no significance” for the 2025 laureate, noting that the committee typically makes its decision several days before its final meeting. “Trump will not win the prize this year. I’m 100 percent certain,” Sveen said.

Trump, who returned to the White House for a second term in January, has repeatedly claimed that he “deserves” the Peace Prize for his role in resolving multiple conflicts, including Gaza. He told reporters, “I don’t know what they’re going to do, really. But I know this: nobody in history has solved eight wars in a period of nine months. And I’ve stopped eight wars. That’s never happened before. Gaza is the biggest of them all.”

Experts in Oslo, however, remain unconvinced, highlighting that Trump’s “America First” policies and approach to international relations contradict the principles laid out in Alfred Nobel’s 1895 will, which created the Peace Prize to reward efforts in promoting peace and resolving conflicts. Sveen further noted that Trump has historically provided Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu considerable freedom in military operations in Gaza, including substantial US military aid, a factor considered inconsistent with Nobel’s ideals.

Speculation about the 2025 laureate is rife, with 338 individuals and organizations nominated. The list remains confidential for 50 years, but several candidates have been mentioned in Oslo. These include Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms—a network of volunteers risking their lives to assist people enduring war and famine—Yulia Navalnaya, widow of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, and the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), an international election watchdog.

The Nobel Committee may also select a laureate that challenges current geopolitical tensions. Possible choices include UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, international organizations like the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) or Palestinian relief agency UNRWA, and judicial bodies such as the International Court of Justice or International Criminal Court. The committee could also champion press freedoms by awarding the prize to organizations such as the Committee to Protect Journalists or Reporters Without Borders.

Nobel Institute spokesman Erik Aasheim assured AFP that “there will be a laureate this year,” dismissing speculation that the prize might be withheld amid the global geopolitical uncertainties. Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize went to Nihon Hidankyo, a group of survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings advocating against nuclear weapons.

The Nobel Peace Prize consists of a diploma, a gold medal, and a cash award of $1.2 million. This announcement follows the other 2025 Nobel prizes in medicine, physics, chemistry, and literature, with the economics prize scheduled to close the 2025 Nobel season on Monday.

As the world watches the announcement, attention will inevitably focus on whether the committee chooses a laureate who reinforces long-standing peace-building efforts or makes a bold statement addressing current international crises.
